Hi

I have been doing a PhD while the kids are young but that is now coming to an end and I'm looking at my options.

I have been doing freelance work while doing the PhD. I'm a qualified Solicitor and I've worked for a number of major organisations, predominantly in the criminal/human rights fields.

I currently have interviews lined up in London for government and NGO jobs but it is a very long commute.

I'm looking at all options and one is to consider dedicating some time to expanding my freelance work.

My work to date has involved policy work, high profile casework, legal research, speech and textbook writing, website drafting training materials etc

I would love to try and turn this into a proper business and a friend, who is a website designer, is going to do a website for me.

I wondered whether any of you who work in legal practice have ideas/views about the kind of services that might be required.

Any ideas appreciated!

Hiya, I'm a freelance legal writer/PR, former solicitor. I fit it all in around young children, 2 at school. I miss being in practice but great to have the skills to use at home. When you talk about freelance, what doyou want to do? You need to focus on exactly what your market is/skills are. What do you want help with? Incidentally, i'm having a website set up now so i'd better get that done quick hadn't i?!

Hiya Estjab

I'm a researcher so I don't think we're looking at the same markets.

Let's swap websites when we're set up and have a look at each others!

Hi

I was wondering how you both got into freelance work, if you don't mind sharing. I'm a solicitor as well and was thinking the only options apart from fee earning in private practice would have been working for something like PLC or as a Professional Support Lawyer. I would be really interested to hear how you got to where you are - particularly the policy work, sounds fascinating.

Thanks

Claire
