Public liability insurance

I've got the cheapest quote from company called Finsbury, who I've never heard of. Should I go for more of a recognised name or am I worrying about nothing?

How did you decide how much cover to take out? Is there a standard level?

I thought I'd be more likely to get realistic answers from mumsnet than insurance broker!

TIA!

There is an umbrella organisation which covers insurers (I think it's the British association of insurers) which guarantees minimal standards. So go for whoever as long as they are regulated (they should be). We are with a no name company and it's fine. Most are underwritten by the big boys in any case!

When we got out our public liability we were told there was only 1/2 companies who actually supply it so all firms will be using the same company just adding on their own margin

You'll need a minimum of 2 million, with products liability too if you supply any kind of product. It's not expensive, though. Less than £100 for a sole trader. NIG do a good all-in-one policy with other business related insurance if you work from home. I think it's called 'Gilt Edge'.

NIG is who our insurance company got our policy with, and all quotes I got from other insurers were all using NIG

Hiscox do one I think. Discount if you're a member of the IOD too....
