Am I crazy to put myself forward for redundancy?????????

Had PFB a year ago and have recently gone back to work, have just been informed am in a pool for a position of 1 role and there are 3 of us in it. So ahve to say if i want to go VR or put myself forward for the role and risk ending up redundant anyway.

So my question is I get a good package, above statory, and I am so tempted to take it. If I could find a PT job my money could subsidise my wages and we wouldn't be worse off really on a monthly basis for a couple of years. But I wouldn't be getting the extras that come with it like profitshare, sharesave, annual bonus etc soooooo ..... what should I do?

If you volunteer for redundancy, are you still entitled to the same benefits when you are out of work? I don't think so, but I may be wrong, hopefully someone more knowledgable will come along. I would wait to be pushed as it seems like there is a 2 in 3 chance that you will be pushed.

If you take VR you aren't eligible for job seekers I have been told (so my redundancy letter says involuntary on it, even though it was voluntary!)

Have you had a look around to see what the availability of PT jobs is?

I DID take it, but am moving to SE and am willing to work in London full time so have more possibilities for work

If you are married you or co habiting you are arely in line for benifts.

I would take it if I could get a job part time and spend more time with LO. The money could be well spent on paying a chunk of the mortgage as this is likely to make more money as the interest rates are still around 3-4 % and savings Zilch.

I'm right that this money is not taxed??? If thats right then even without a job we'd be just about ok for a year.......

You are not taxed on the first £30K

Mine was NOTHING like that large a pay out

You are taxed on any payment in lieu of notice (PILON)

WowOoo · 14/02/2009 17:16

There's a 1 in 3 chance that you'll lose it anyway then?

OOh, I maybe would. Your PFB will be a lovely age now and hopefully you can get P/T work. Perhaps look into P/t work while you are deciding. Do all the extras add up to quite a bit?
Mm, I'm not helping am I?!!

Don't know what field you are in, but mine is pretty dire jobwise at the mo.

BennyAndSwoon · 14/02/2009 17:17

Would your VR payment be significanly larger than the CR payment would be?

WowOoo · 14/02/2009 17:18

Don't do it yet. Hadn't thopught of JSA and things like that. SORRY. Ignore my post.

trixymalixy · 14/02/2009 17:18

Can you afford to be out of work for a while?

Is the voluntary package better than the non-voluntary package?

It sounds like you have a good chance of being pushed anyway in which case you would be eligible for benefits so i would maybe wait.

Hi, I took voluntry severence on 1st Jan after returning to work in May. I have not regretted it at all! I guess you need to work out if you can get another job, if the payoff will support you and for how long.

It may be worth taking the package if there is something you would like to do more than your current work eg have more time with your baby or work part time. I took severence cos I wanted to study and do my chartered exams to help my career. My colleague took it cos she wanted to be a SAHM and another colleague was fed up of working in the same company for 10 years!

Don't be scared and do what it right for you and your family!

TBH I'm a bit scared that if I don't go for it I'll be the one that actually gets the job!!!!! I know thats sounds worng and it is really I should be really pleased and grateful which of course i am but i'm not sure i can do what they want me to, when i think what will be needed to get it right it just doesn't sound like what i want to do. I know that the team i will be left with are not up to the job and my responisbilities will be going up.

Fat controller - thanks for your experience. DD and poorly dad are really where I want to focus atm. Just worried I'll regret it later. I really think that if I leave this job I will never get to the same level anywhere else.

If you read your last post it sounds like you know what you WANT to do!!!

trixymalixy · 14/02/2009 21:20

Can you say to them on the side that you don't want to take voluntary as it would mean you wouldn't be entitled to benefits, but that you wouldn't mind being made redundant.

that way they can go through the motions interviewing you etc, but not give you the job. I'm sure they would be happier making someone redundant who doesn't mind.

LoveBeingAMummy · 18/02/2009 16:47

I've done it - I've handed my letter in today. What made up my mind? Found out last night my dad does not have long left
