Hi, I've been a care worker now for 12 years, working with young adults with learning disabilities. I'd really like to train to do something else.
I only work 2 nights a week at the moment while my daughter is at nursery.
I'd love to be a nursery school teacher but I don't think they get paid much, I'm not sure what to do. I'd like to do a uni course that is funded preferably. I've thought about becoming a speech therapist for children too. Does anyone else have any ideas? Nursing is another option but I'm a bit squeemish.
My husband keeps telling me that he dosn't want me working nights all the time for very little money. He wants me to "make something of myself". He says he's pleased that I do a great job of raising our daughter and go out to work but he says I'm waisted in the job I'm doing.
I think he just wants me to earn more money. If you have any ideas please let me know. I feel a bit old to be re training or going to uni as I'm 28.

I certainly don't think you're too old to retrain, especially in something like nursing/ caring. I think the marority of students these days in nursing are mature. You would get a bursary and the fees paid for you with that kind of course(not the degree though i think)It certainly would be worthwhile in the longrun with salary and to be honest I couldn't do what you do and I'm a psychiatric nurse who is also getting more squeemish the older I'm getting! If it's the best investiment for earning potential I would imagine that nursing is better paid than nursery nursing but it all depends on what interests you and not too mention the shift work for nursing which I wouldn't think you'd have with the nursery nursing. Hope thats a bit of useful info

I believe a nursery school teacher would be on the payscale that a teacher is on. They are not just nursery nurses, they have a degree in teaching the early years.

Never too old to retrain, I have a lot of friend in their 30's who are doing a degree in childhood studies :D

my dh retrained as a nurse at 28 after serving with the RAF. he's now 42 and manages his own unit having initiallty trained in LD but has trained in psychiatric aswell.

if you've got that amount of experience in ld, how about care management in ld? our local social services recruited several people with experience rather than degrees etc and trained them up.
