How old is too old?

I am considering training to become a primary school teacher. I would be nearly 45 by the time I qualify. Is that too old?

I am not a primary school teacher, but I certainly would not have thought 45 was too late to start a new career. You probably won't retire until you are 65. Another 20 good years away.

My mum went back to work at a similar age. Pre-SAHM she had worked as a teacher.
Post-SAHM she worked a social worker. At first unqualified. She was a mature student at 50. Actually she finished uni the year before I started .

I'm the same age & was considering same! Can it be done from the other side of the channel?

Wow, retraining for a new career at 50! Good on her!

My brother is currently doing PGCE at age of 54, having worked in international business all his life previously - he wants to teach maths at secondary age

I hope so Cariboo. I don't want to make a career out of my current job!

It isn't too late.

You aren't too old to train to be a teacher.

You are too old to waste time working in an area which isn't where your heart lies.

Go for it!

Some days I think I'm too old to be a mother, let alone start training for a new career.

This in slightly contraversialin that I am not saying that you can't be a good teacher before children and when you're young - I like to think I was, but I think the more life experience you have and having children certainly counts as a life experience the more you can bring to teaching. So go for it. However I did not find it the ideal career to fit round children despite the holidays because it can be as intense as parenting and I felt I never had enough energy for all my "children".
