Compulsary pay cut Q. HR ladies help me out please?

Hi

I should know this - in fact I think I do know the answer but.....

Can a business enforce pay cuts accross the board without any consultation? No Union. Under 100 employees.

This is a personal Q not one for work (if Flowery is about!).

Simple answer is yes.

More complicated than that obviously, as it's a change to t&cs requiring consent, but as long as they do it right, and if the circumstances are such that it can be genuinely justified, then potentially yes after going through a hefty procedure, jumping through all the right hoops, etc.

Of course the reason I ignored half of your question is because I am on a break...

Simple answer is of course, no, they can't without any consultation.

But the more complicated answer is that they potentially can as long as they do some token consultation even if said consultation is a flat no.

What I thought really. tbh the alternative is that they will have to make more redundancies and they don't think the business could operate at all with less staff Not me btw but a family member.

Doing it as an alternative to redundanacy will usually be accepted by emplyoment tribunals as a valid reason TBH (unless bosses can easily cut costs elsewhere)...they shoudl however consult with staff and staff should then for example try to argue to work fewer hours or something as a concession for accepting.

Thanks Squiffy. No one has uttered a word of compalint I think they all know what the alternative is and are just thankful for what they have been offered.
