Hi I am a nurse too,
section 1- my CV and nursing posts held
section 2- reports/IPR's
section 3- certificates of mandatory courses like manual handling, trust induction etc
section 4- study days attended, I always try and write a reflection on study days to show how I will implement in practice what I have learnt and include references
section 4- non- nursing courses attended
section 5- I have a personal development plan it shows the interviewer what your aimimg for
section 6- competencies
Does your trust have a moodle account? if it does you can access a site called skillport where you can do online courses towards meeting your KSF
hope this helps, what jobs are you applying for?

Ive tried looking for stuff on the RCN and MNC website but cant see anything.

A woman in work does them professionally but Im going to have to wait two weeks for it, and I dont think it will come in time

Don't stress about it, I interview lots and only look at someone's portfolio if they've got it on their lap and only out of politeness.
A well-presented portfolio does not impress me in the slightest.

notnowbernard · 25/01/2009 20:39

Do we need them?

Or rather, are we required to have one?

DisasterArea · 25/01/2009 20:41

and stifficates they care to give out at study days.
no reflection. that is personal and a bit like a diary and for me only.
no personal development plans or appraisal stuff because i haven't had one for 3 years now.
CV at the beginning.
thanks cards from patients.

as an interviewer i'd skim through it to see how recent any study days are.

unfitmother · 25/01/2009 20:46

Yes, evidence of can be requested by the NMC when re-registering.
I don't have one but am always doing courses, have recently done a Diploma in Health Services Management and have just started a BSc so wouldn't find it too difficult to provide evidence of further study.
There is a lot of pressure put on new RGNs to have a work of art portfolio but most employers are not interested.

notnowbernard · 25/01/2009 20:47

Yes, can provide evidence of courses/training days etc if required

But have never kept a portfolio

unfitmother · 25/01/2009 20:50

Guess you're not newly-qualified then?

notnowbernard · 25/01/2009 20:51

I guess not!

It's been 11 yrs

twinklytoes · 25/01/2009 22:54

not one here either

but can I have links or more info to the moodle account zoe?

also dh needs to do a diploma / degree in something like health services management (I need him on an 8d so I don't have to go back to work!!)- unfit can I have a link to the course content please?

glad it not just me then i had one when i first qualified but now just have a bundle of certificates from study days/mandatory training plus certificates from training from extended roles.

If the NMC ask to see it I can provide evidence of continued professional development but its not in a sectioned fine as such

onepieceofbrusselssprout · 26/01/2009 20:10

Oh flip. (adds to bottom of to-do list)

Have been qualified for over 13 years and been in same job for almost 8 years, but yes as others have said the NMC could ask for this evidence.

fledtoscotland I have the same stuff as you, I plan to buy a good quality ring binder and file everything nicely with some reflections and other waffle relevant information if I am asked to produce mine.

glitterfairy · 26/01/2009 20:16

If you are a member of the RCN there are virtual ones on line at rcn.org.

There are a fair few virtual ones which help you build it to be truthful.

I agree with op's that they are usually not even looked at so dont stress too much.

fledtoscotland · 26/01/2009 20:28

sorry for "fine" read "file". good job there's not a portfolio on spelling tests

glitterfairy · 27/01/2009 07:47

Mosschops, just read that you couldnt find anything on the NMC and RCN web sites so here is a link www.rcn.org.uk/development/learning/learningzone/my_portfolio

You need to go into the learning zone and the my portfolio section helps you build your portfolio.

Good luck with the interviews let us know how they go!

Calling all nurses..

Have been out of nursing for 10 years and am starting my return to nursing course tomorrow. How do you cope with shift work and children. My DD is one year old. I am concerned that she will be really unsettled when I start doing shifts. My parents and parents in law have her regularly and am going to try to ensure that she is not overly unsettled by the shifts but there will be times when I will be dropping her off very early and picking her up very late. Would be good to hear how other people cope with shift work and children.
