I think TNR does also give the impression that you haven't even bothered to think about the font, just used the default on Windows.

Except that on our new MS Word under VISTA [yes I know yuck, yuck, yuck. We've had it ages and I still can't stand it. I bring my work laptop home nearly every night just to avoid using VISTA!] the default font is no longer TNR.

elkiedee · 25/01/2009 21:12

I'd recommend Arial - relatively easy to read both on screen and on paper, and commonly used for inhouse styles so likely to be familiar and unobtrusive.

gigglewitch · 25/01/2009 21:14

Another vote for Arial
Actually i read this in an article too - in the TES jobs section lol!

LowSlungAndOverhung · 25/01/2009 21:21

The new Office2007 package comes with a different font as the default which is like Arial but even more lovely IMO. [/useless fact]

BouncingTartan · 25/01/2009 21:22

I agree with the Prof.. Times New Roman is so dated!

I vote for Arial.

LowSlungAndOverhung · 25/01/2009 21:22

Jinx Roisin. I cant remember what the font is called but it does begin with 'c'.

MrsMerryHenry · 25/01/2009 21:24

Arial or Times (though I hate Times!). Bear in mind that the computer of the person reading your CV may have limited fonts, which means their computer may self-select an alternative which alters all your formatting. Everyone has these two, so they're fail-safe.

LowSlungAndOverhung · 25/01/2009 21:26

Ah, it's Calibri. Fascinating.

MrsMerryHenry · 25/01/2009 21:26

As the wife of a book designer can I clarify here that Times is a serif font and Arial is not - 'serif' refers to the fringe extras; the 'curly' bits you get on a letter. 'Sans' serif means without serifs.

MrsMerryHenry · 25/01/2009 21:27

DH has complained that I should have called him a 'graphic' designer, not book designer. Spot the anal retentive in the family!

(better click 'post' before he spots that comment)

ProfRichardDawkins · 25/01/2009 21:42

In my defence, I do work in a dull field.

ProfRichardDawkins · 25/01/2009 21:43

I wish there was a font called Anal Retentive.

Northernlurker · 25/01/2009 21:47

Arial - it's lovely

thequietone · 25/01/2009 21:50

just don't use Comic Sans. Just a glimpse of that font makes me queasy these days ("look at me, I'm in touch with the youth and have a sense of humour, don't you know?")

Ripeberry · 25/01/2009 21:52

I like using Tahoma. As it looks quite neat but modern looking.

blueshoes · 25/01/2009 21:55

Prof, for you, can I suggest Courier, beloved of turgid American legal documents.

Hassled · 25/01/2009 21:59

thequietone - I used to adore Comic Sans and used it at the drop of a hat. Now I'm with you - it's the font equivalent of a Conservative politician getting down with the yoof.

morningpaper · 25/01/2009 22:14

Comic Sans is the txt spk of fonts

KatyMac · 25/01/2009 22:15

I use comic sans for the children as it is hard to find one with an 'a' that looks like handwriting (iyswim)

pointydug · 25/01/2009 22:30

comic sans is for children only

whinegums · 25/01/2009 22:31

Nothing but Helvetica! Pure and clean. Akzidenz grotesk as an alternative, but is a specialist font, and v like Helvetica. And if you are emailing your cv, save it as a pdf first, then the person receiving it won't screw up your font and formatting when they open it.

Comic Sans should be banned.

There is a film called Helvetica for all anal retentives/geeks/design fans.... 'Tis fab!
