Can my work do this - and is it a good idea?

I have popped into work this morning for a 'back to work' meeting. I was expecting just a chat about developments in my 7months off and a good look at my timetable (I am a teacher). The meeting was with the Head and my line manager. At school I am currently Head of Year 11 and my mat leave has been covered my another teacher acting up to the post. They have asked me if she can continue in my job until Year 11 leave (May) as it is good continuity for the pupils. The Head (who has no kids - only cats) then pointed out that returning to work after 3 kids may be a struggle (??!?!). My line manager was lovely and explained that in no uncertain terms was this me being shunted out. They want me to do an Intervention role whereby I mentor Year 11 kids behind on coursework, in difficulties and meet with their parents etc. Also to focus same type of thing on Year 8. This sounds like fun and it is only temporary. In Sept I would go back to my HoY job (however, they are restructuring - so would having not done it for a year count against me?. There is no change in pay or anything. Thing is the job has no title, there is nothing written down and I don't really trust my Head teacher! I go back in two weeks and feel a bit aaaarrggghhh! Any advice?

TRUST YOUR INSTINCTS!

Sorry - that wasn't very helpful was it? Does sound as if they've got it all planned out a bit though. do you feel that you're in danger of being pushed out permanently? - as in 'oh now she needs to carry on for a few more months etc.'

They seem to have a plan but nothing is written down. As I am employed as a Head of Year they can't just give my job away without ending my contract. I guess that's a good thing. I love working with the 'outcast' kids! this could be an opportunity, but it all seems a bit shoddily organised. I'm not even sure if it's legal! Line manager kept saying it wasn't because they didn't want me just that it made sense for this year.

You have the right to return back to your own job if you return during Ordinary Maternity Leave, which is the first 26 weeks. If you return during or after Additional maternity Leave, you don't automatically have the right to go back to your original job if it's not reasonably practicable for you to do so.

I'm sure kids manage with changes of HoY all the time with no ill effects, so i don't think they could make that argument, or you could make a fuss about it if they do.

However it sounds as though this alternative proposal is something you might be interested in anyway. So don't dismiss it out of hand. If you're interested in it, do it. Just make sure it is all in writing, probably as a sort of secondment agreement, with confirmation of what this new job entails, the job title, confirmation that your salary remains unchanged, and confirmation of the date you will be returning to your substantive post.

Thanks fbb that sounds like good advice. I like the secondment idea and will poss go for that.
