Ok just filling in the form to apply to work part time

My reasons are:

Long commute to work means i have to rely on my mum to pick ds up from nursery in the evenings

I am a single parent to a 2yr and feel that i am missing out on seeing him grow up, he spends 10 hr a day in nursery, i want to be able to spend more time with him

How do i say this in my application to my employer??

I am crap a wording these things

Thanking you kindly

I think you can't really say a lot about childcare as such although should mention a better balance in your work/life ratio.
TBH, what your boss and company will be interested in is how your application will impact the business.
You need to suggest solutions to a lot of their potential questions.
Will they have to employ someone else? Who will do your work when you are not there? How flexible are you prepared to be?
Good luck!

This is just a rough draft what do you think?

'I would like to be able to reduce my hours in order for me to be able to leave work earlier mon - thurs so that I can make it home in time to pick up my son from nursery, at the moment I am having to rely on my mother to do this for me.

I am also a single parent to a 2yr boy and feel that I could balance my work and home life better by reducing my hours and working days from 37 to 30 hrs per week spread over 4 days, therefore working 7.5 hrs, Mon ? Thurs

I am very willing to be flexiable to suit the business needs, therefore if I am needed to work more that my contracted hours on special occasions then I will agree to that if such occasions should arise.'

Theri is not a lot of space on the application form so i need to keep it brief

Might be better if i remove the first sentence then, so it now looks like this:

'
I am a lone parent to a 2 year old child and feel that I could balance my work and home life more economically, by reducing my working days from 5 to 4 days, and reducing my working hours from 37 to 30 hrs per week, therefore working 7.5 hrs, Mon ? Thurs

I am very willing to be flexible on how my time will be spread over the working week, with whatever suits the business needs and that of my departmental responsibilities and colleagues.'

Don't use up valuable space giving lots of information about your childcare arrangements and single parent status.

All you have to do is confirm that you have a child under 6 and are making the request to care for that child. I don't think be that basic or formal, but they don't need or want lots of detail.

You are making the request to enable you to collect your son from nursery and to enable you to care for him on Fridays. That's it. Use the rest of the space to give lots of reasons why this will be good for the business and to explain how you will adjust your work with no negative effect on anyone else.

If you haven't already seen it, workingdamilies website has an online guide to preparing your flexible working case, including how to explain how it benefits the business, and has a good factsheet as well.
