Meeting to discuss flexible working - does it have to be in person

I had an update with my manager a couple of months ago and mentioned I would like to make a flexible working request. She said to let her know nearer the time (I'm going back to work in Feb). I wrote a letter in December detailing the changes I'd like to request (these are of a temporary rather than permanent nature, and per the company policy, these can be arranged informally through management).

I contacted my manager yesterday to ask if she had had a chance to review the request (1 month has passed) and she said she'd like to meet me to discuss. Problem is I cannot arrange childcare (I have no family nearby and DH can't get time off work). I'm not sure I think it's appropriate to bring DS to such a meeting. Is it acceptable do you think for me to ask if we can discuss over the phone rather than in person?

Anyone? I need to reply to her email this afternoon and I'd really appreciate anyone's opinion.....

Your employer is obliged to meet you in person to discuss it and to give you the opportunity to bring a colleague with you for support.

They are obliged to meet you in person within 28 days of receipt of the application, so it sounds as though they have gone outside the statutory procedure already.

I would advise you to think of some way you can meet if at all possible. Do you have someone who could come with you and wait outside with DS? Can your DH really not take any time off at all? Is there a colleague who is at work who could watch DS for an hour? A friend you could take with you. Anything?

Thanks both
Flowery - I've asked now if she can do it by phone. If she says no, I'll bring DS with me and hope he's asleep at the time. I'm not surprised my manager ignored the stat. deadlines - he has no idea about regulations and HR are not v helpful where I work, despite it being a large organisation
