ARRRGH! We are being credit crunched! We have escaped unscathed as yet now DH could lose his job!

He works in a call center for Vodafone. Vodafone are apparently axing most of their outsource staff to cut costs. DH's call center is losing the contract that he works on.

They have been assured that it is mainly managers who face job loss and those at advisor level (DH) will mainly keep their jobs but maybe relocated to other call centers in our area. This wouldn't be practical for us as DH doesn't drive, train fairs are extortinate and my job seems safer than his. If he were to relocate he wouldn't be home in time for me to go to work.

What are his rights if he refuses to be relocated? Does he just have to leave? Or do they have to pay him off? If he leaves is he still entitled to claim any benefits or will they say that he left a job and is therefore not entitled?

Thanks DaddyJ atm I am not too worried. DH is but he is the worrier in our relationship. We coped on one wage before I started working and at a push can do it again and should still be able to keep up morgate repayments okay. Plus if he is home I can work more hours.

Poor you

Have you got mortgage repayment insurance? BIL lost his job, and this more or less covers the mortgage.

Has he got anything in his contract about them having the right to relocate him within reason?

When it comes to redundancy, he may forfeit his right to redundancy money if he refuses an offer of 'reasonable' alternative employment. He might unfortunately find it difficult to demonstrate that alternative employment within the same area is not reasonable I'm afraid, as your DH's opinion of train fare costs and your own working arrangements are not his employer's concern, and he would probably not be able to use those as reasons why it is not a reasonable alternative.

Im not sure re his contract as they had him sign a new not long ago and I didn't look at it. I'll get him to check.

No we don't have morgate protection insurance. We were offered it but DH decided that it was too expensive and that we would look around for cheaper, but afaik we didn't ever get any.

Not worried about the morgate, its fixed rate and the repayments would be managable on my wage, esp if I got more hours which wouldn't be a problem.
