I qualify as a MH nurse this summer, have seen a great band 5 job advertised on the NHS site and spoke to the ward manager yesterday about applying ( I was worried that I was being a bit premature!)
He told me to apply....

now Im flummoxed, its my first application for a qualified nurse post and Im scared ill bugger the application up.

Are there any buzz words/phrases in this area of mental health or perhaps anything (maybe family therapy???) that I should read up on.

Im sure I wont get the job, but the interview experience could be worthwhile ( I would love the job though)

Hi I work in MH but only did adolescent during training ( 19 years ago).
For any post you should use the job description as a guide as this will give you a list of essential and desirable skills.

From that you should pick up what they are looking for. Obv knowledge of MH act and child protection issues would be advantageous.

When I am interviewing for a band 5 I am looking for life skills and ability to continue learning, rather than loads of experience in particular field. Honestly if some one uses buzz words I genearly get suspicious. Best to highlight major learning, ie, assessment, communication, recording and interpersonal skills.

Also good to have a genuine speech of why you are interested in the job.
One last point, if you can go for an informal visit this goes down well,as you have gone out of your way to show an interest and staff often give you feeders for the interview.

Good luck, by the way I hate teenagers!
