but I have just been given an offer of VR.

They were meant to give the offers/knockbacks on TUESDAY

I got a no on THURSDAY

My boss called me at 8:20 this evening to say that they have now made me an offer and how can he send it to me......

BUT they still want a decision by monday morning (which they are not going to get)

Some of it is the redundancy payment, some is PILON (payment in iueu of notice), Some is ex-gracia payment (shut up money)

I know I am not taxed on reduncancy up to 30K, and that I am taxed on PILON.

Am I taxed on the ex-gratia

PILON is taxed if they have the contractual right to do that, which they probably have. If there is no provision to PILON in your contract it't not taxable income, as it is essentially compensation or damages for breach of contract.

Ex gratia as far as I remember would not be taxed as long as it is not contractual in any way, and cannot be seen as in exchange for some kind of service at all.

If it's genuinely a termination payment, basically an enhanced redundancy payment, afaik it would not be taxable income. Up to the £30,000 limit obviously.

But if I were your employer I would be getting my payroll people to double check for me.

Thanks floweryB

The whole thing sucks, the timing, everything. And the letter is all "this is an estimate and you may get something different". But make up your mind now. And we may make you work your notice etc etc...........

I am in a union (UNITE) but how the hell do I get advice at the weekend?

My company are feckers (big international just been taken over by aggressive other international)

Don't know about the advice over the weekend. Have UNITE got a website with contact details? I don't know if unions are generally contactable at weekends in some way. I would have thought so as obviously lots of people work weekends and might need help.

I think otherwise speak to someone first thing tomorrow and say you are unable to give an answer immediately as you have been unable to contact anyone to take any advice, you will be doing so today.

I have accepted.

It is not a huge amount, but I was going to leave anyway, so I will see it as a bonus.

Slightly scarey, as I don't have another job confirmed, but hey....
