I'd love to work somewhere like Borders book shop where I could help people with choosing their reading material - as well as sniff all the new books

not sure if that helps you though

stitch · 14/12/2008 22:25

thank you fo rthe suggestion though.
i think a lot of the retail sector is basically a lot of shelf stacking type stuff. or maybe i am making huge assumptions?
i do a lot of charity work, and love getting people to fork over money. am wondering if i could use that sort of thing insomething?
i also have more degrees than reasonable. and trained secondary scienc teacher.

a doctor friend of mine, her ideal job would be to work on the beatuy counters, such as clinique etc, in stores, but apparently you have to be trained as a beautician for them.

lol @ your friend

I too have a degree and yet I love sniffing books, am now outing myself as a complete weirdo!!

I started a course last year on Event Management (had to give it up ) but what I did of it was really good and I really enjoyed it

would you like something like that? your charity work would stand you in good stead and you could look at the voluntary sector for experience?

fishie · 14/12/2008 22:33

i am a fundraiser for a charity. you could do that maybe.

there are lots of different disciplines in fundraising. all of them will require some 'shelf stacking' equivalent work, it can be very dull.

your doctor friend must be no stranger to training, why doesn't she want to go ahead with career change?

VinoEsmeralda · 14/12/2008 22:35

fund raising for charities (Oxfam springs to mind). If you like sales you could always work in a call centre. Recruitment consultant, teacher.

Why not try a temping agency and do a copule of different temping jobs and take it from there?

stitch · 14/12/2008 22:45

hmm, that is a good idea. temping.
i do a lot of fundraising type stuff for the charity, but not had any training for it. event management is exactly the sort of thing i would like to do. where did you do the course?
my friend wont retrain because as a gp, she earns a fair bit more than she would as a clinique lady in debenhams. but that would be her ideal job . great fun, and nothing to bring back home.

sorry, just seen you're in Surrey

I'm in Scotland so was on a course up here - shall do a quick search and see if there is something similar near to you

I would imagine there must be!

llareggub · 14/12/2008 22:55

Conference organising?
Librarian or similar
Work for a charity in fundraising role

dizzyjingles · 14/12/2008 22:57

oohhh check this one out

tourism management

dizzyjingles · 14/12/2008 23:03

event planning here

this is the kind of thing I was doing but if you look at unis and colleges near to you they'll have more info

there are at least 2 universitys in Scotland that now do Event Management as a degree course, Napier even do it at post grad level so I can't imagine for one minute that there won't be something near to you

stitch · 14/12/2008 23:08

sounds lovely both of them
but i already have lots of degrees. i doubt i would get the fees paid for another one.
i already work for a charity, which is what has given me the idea, but it is a very small charity, so no trainign, just adhoc event planning etc.

meybe i am being precious, but i was thinking i cannot work for a charity which i do not believ in. for example the cancer chairties.
but maybe i am being precious?

OP posts:
dizzyjingles · 14/12/2008 23:12

no, there is no point in doing something you don't believe in

I was aiming to try to work for Cancer Research UK but it all hasn't worked out for various reasons

is there a particular charity you had in mind? you could always keep an eye on their webpage

university/colleges all need event planners too as well as businesses etc

you could always work for yourself as a wedding planner etc

stitch · 14/12/2008 23:15

notenough confidence to do my own business yet.
but thats an idea. find a smaller business?

OP posts:
VinoEsmeralda · 14/12/2008 23:17

maybe speak to Businesslink, they also run free courses for start up businesses or people thinking about starting up (they are very good IMO)

dizzyjingles · 14/12/2008 23:18

you could do it on your own in your spare time so you'd have your current job until you were up and running?

thornrose · 14/12/2008 23:19

How about Counselling?

stitch · 14/12/2008 23:21

i think i might find it difficult to be professional about ocounselling. as i do have a tendency to emapthise too much, and get stressed out by other peoplse problems

will try and do a search

OP posts:
VinoEsmeralda · 14/12/2008 23:24

you could combine your teacher experience with counselling at a secondary school...
