Been 'promoted' - BUT what are the implications?

Hello, hope someone has been through similar... I've been asked if i would like to become a company director - would mean a pay rise (yay!) and later a share of the business.

I've done a bit of research, but do any MNers have any advice on things I should consider before taking it on?

I know about the legal implications of being liable if the business goes bust etc, I guess I'm worried about work/life balance - so feeling obliged to spend more time on work when I already work quite long hours! I guess I want to be able to say " my LO comes first whatever happens with the business" but maybe harder to do if you're not just a salaried employee...???

Pththtth.... just fishing for feedback really!

I don't know much about this, never having reached that exalted position myself, but surely the simplest thing is to have a chat with whoever asked you.

I wouldn't go in saying my LO comes first, but a chat along the lines of wanting to check that existing working hours being acceptable and what sort of additional expectations would there be seems reasonable to me.

It sounds like they rate you very highly to offer you this, so it's probably more about ensuring that your services are secured and that you are given responsibilities that match your skills rather than working additional hours.

Well done you.

Thanks Rookie - I'd had a few celebratory drinks by the time I posted so when I woke up this morning I thought hmm, maybe I should just talk to my boss about it instead of posting on Mnet!

I like the phrase "additional expectations" though - I will use that!
