Advice on writing a good supporting statement please

I know you should follow the job description and person spec but I just can't seem to get it right. What does a good one look like? I can't find any on the internet!

And what about the skills that you are less impressive on but have to comment on or you will fail the shortlist. Should you be honest or say something like 'I would relish the opportunity to strengthen these skills??"

Don't know, but I'm crap at the supporting statement, too, so I'm bumping in the hope that some HR guru comes along with good advice.

Ok you can put a good supporting statement in a cover letter as long as you reiterate the main points of the job spec and how you fit the spec.
If there are skills that you are less impressive with, I would either keep quiet OR aim to do some voluntary work in that area so you can at least write on your statement that you intend to further develop in this area etc. Hope that makes sense.

Yes, but what does that look like? I've done loads of these with little success, all reiterating the main points of the job spec and how I fit the person spec, to no avail. I'm doing somehting wrong but haven't a clue how to put it right as no one will tell me what is wrong with them.
