Quick history, usually work nights but am doing the odd day shift over xmas while dc at school.Have had to take a day off with him as he is ill and it falls on my day shift. Work rang me back once I had phoned in and asked if I wanted to swap to late, which I couldnt as both my dh and mum (who is my childcare provider) are working till 7:30 as it was my early day. We are entitled to 3 days paid leave for carers so was I right to say i couldn't swap?? Also I am not sure if they were being funny or helpful?

Sounds as though they were being helpful offering you an alternative to using up one of your 3 days enabling you to save them in case of another emergency.

If they asked it you wanted to swop to a late shift (instead of suggesting you must), sounds to me like they were being helpful.

Lucky you having three days paid leave for carers though. That's a good benefit. Most employers it's unpaid (by law they have to give this for emergencies) with pay at their discretion.

If you can't do it then you are in your righht to say so.

However they may have just been trying to help out too.
