Think I need to try and go back full time, WWYD? Any advice?

I am a teacher and doing 3 days which is perfect, dd in nursery 2 days, with mil for 1 day, I really enjoy my job and have generous holidays. DD is 12mo.
BUT, we are in a 1 bed flat, in lots of debt and dh has just been made redundent, so I have been thinking that going back ft would solve alot of money worries and take the pressure off dh. I am really worried though about dd spending more time in childcare, mil is in her 60s and while she and dd love there day together I worry about her having the energy to do more, nursery is expensive but we would still be £250ish a month better off I think. DH is in sales, I suppose he could look for pt work?? I don't know what to do, my head may well decide that she doesn't need me to do more hours, but I feel I should ask.. I don't know MN opinions??

No suggestions but am in a similar boat to you - 3 days teaching and have been promising myself I will start to do one day supply a week as well. I get the odd day at my school but just can't bring myself to sign up with an agenny

Have you thought about supply teaching? How flexible is nursery - ours are pretty good about DS doing extra days at late notice.

I hadn't thought about supply no, nursery aren't really flexible but mil is I guess, could be a compromise.. Are you able to get much supply? We employ two study supervisors at our place

if you let the person in charge of your cover know that you are available for extra supply then you might be 'top of the list' as it were.

Would you earn more full time than your dh would part time iykwim? that might answer your question.

Lucycat · 22/11/2008 17:43

or is there a childminder you could use to take up the slack so you weren't completely reliant on mil?

wonderstuff · 22/11/2008 17:49

I earn more than dh ft, but also pt, so if dh went pt and me ft we wouldn't be better off, because his pt rate would be so much lower than mine (I think). Also think that it would be harder for him to find a pt job than a ft one, but since he has no job at the moment, laid off last week its all up in the air. Hes in sales, I really don't know what he is going to end up with, in the last 5 years his income has varied quite a bit. My job is recession proof and reliable

My family were in a similar psition to you. My DH decided t stay at home parttime (in our case every pm) and I work every afternoon from 2 -8. We pay no childcare and we both get a look in with the kids. However we're both tired.

Lucycat · 22/11/2008 17:51

oh god I feel for you I really do.

This is one time that you do feel very lucky to be a teacher.

wonderstuff · 22/11/2008 17:59

Do you mind me asking what your dh does happychappy?

You're right lucycat, at least one of us is in a stable job, could me much worse, family are really supportive but I really hope he finds something soon, he'd only been there a few months, so no redundancy..
