tax credits and self-employment - can anyone help my spinning brain

Aaaargh. DH and I are both self-employed and I cannot for the life of me get my head round the tax credits situation - and the telephone help people aren't much help really. So has anyone managed to make sense of it?

We're both self-employed with variable incomes, which is hard enough to start with, but I work on a contract basis, so my hours are utterly unpredictable (vary from 3 days to none, but then there is also unpaid work time when I am drumming up work).

I know I am losing money on this, and have tried to get my head round it twice, and failed. And I'm usually quite good at this kind of thing. So can anyone explain it to me in simple sentences, or point me at a guide for people like me? It would be very much appreciated!

they usually based it on estimations, and then you tell them the final figures when you've got them and they make up the difference/ask you to repay any excess
