Notice to quit job and can they be funny

I have recently been temporary contract lecturing. The college is so bad !!! The job is stressful and the head does not listen to the fact that this job is making me stressed and ill.

I have given 1 months notice to leave. HR told me that it should be 3 months. However, I told them that I never had a contract a few weeks ago when I began and wasn't told about the 3 month notice period. None of the other lecturers know about this either.

I have a few more weeks to go. The head doesn't want me to go to a medical appointment and wants me to re-arrange, I have said no !!. I told HR and they said that I should be able to keep the appointment. I also told the HR that there was nothing from stopping me walking out of the job now as I have had no contract. They said verbally I couldn't.

If I take the odd day sick during the next few weeks and only work a short week, can the college complain ?? If I work one day and go off the other day and work again. Can they say anything or make me work longer ??

help

Technically, you do have a contract even though you have not signed/recieved one as it is implied so it is good idea for your reference to toe the line so to speak. There's nothing to stop you being ill though.

I am not interested in their reference as I wouldn't use them again.

How ill can you be ? and do they add the time off onto the period you have to work out ?

They shouldn't do. You will need signing off if you are away for more than a week. Your doctor is the only one who can say how ill you need to be for this.

What does this mean, if I work for them 4 days a week and am ill for 2 days a week.

Can they say anything ??

Sorry to be so moany about it, but the job is awful and so stressful, told the head but they didn't listen !!

Simply can't cope and feel like having a nervous breakdown. That bad. They have had people walk about after 1 week in the job, so I feel that I have given them sufficient notice that I am going.

No. It just doesn't look good if you need a reference. If you are ill then you are ill. If you are ill for more than a week you need a doctors note. You are able to self-certificate for less than a week. You shouldn't have to make the time up.

Unless specified in a contract or similar, the only notice period you are required to give by law is one week.

Not sure what you mean by 'not using them again', but I would be cautious about irritating them too much. You might not think you will need a reference, but how will you explain a lack of reference for this employment, or the gap in employment if you're going to pretend you didn't do it?

If you don't want to work anymore, and you are sure you have received no document indicating a longer notice period, give one week notice then leave.

Have a chat with your GP. A teacher from ds's old school gave notice, then went off sick with a 'stress related illness' so didn't go back. I'm not saying you should do this but you should chat to your GP if you are finding it difficult to cope.
