Do I have to tell my manager the reason for my GP appointment?

Have to go and get a repeat script for citalopram. Up till now I've only been getting 1 pack at a time so have to go back each time to see the GP. Normally I'd say something about why I needed some time off for the appointment, but I don't want to under the circs. Manager was looking at me questioningly as if waiting for me to say more. Do they need to know?

no, it's none of their business.

if you feel like you are expected to say something, just make up something mundane like an ear infection - they will never know!

No, you don't. However, if you've had an appointment for a month for a few months, a good manager will look a bit questionning. A good HR department will brief managers to look out for patterns of absence or medical appointments that may indicate an underlying issue that needs additional support or might be a disability. If you don't want to say, just don't. However, if you have to have many more consecutive one pack prescriptions, be braced for some gentle digging. I would just say something like "it's personal, but it's just routine" if really pushed.

I was working permanently from home because of a broken foot before so no-one noticed when i nipped off for half and hour before. But I will try to get several packs this time to save trouble.

Thanks ribena
