Euro job offer - please help

My DH has been offered his dream job, but it pays in Euros.

Does anyone have any experience of this and, if so, did your company offer any guarantees? For example, one friend was paid a supplement if the Euro/sterling exchange rate changed and as a result impacted negatively on her wage.

Also, does anyone with knowledge of the markets have any opinions on whether - if no such "protection" is on offer - we would be exposing ourselves to too much risk in accepting this offer? I am worried that my DH's income could go down by 20% overnight!

Are you going to have Euro costs? Are you moving to Euroland?

We are living in Switzerland and DH earns Euros but get a Goods and services differencial to cover the cost of living here being higher.

Hi MmeLindt,

No, he is going to home-based in the UK, but contracted by a German based company with lots of European travel.

The thing is his income could go up 20% overnight. At the moment, living in UK and earning Euros would be great but you do of course have a risk that it could go the other way.

The exchange rate at the moment is very good for Euro-earners, for the first time in years.

I guess you have to work out if you could still live on his salary if the pound becomes stronger again.

Thanks for that, MmeL.

He is getting a good hike in wages, so I guess what we have to do is keep our spending at its current level and save for the rainy day that may well come when the pound gets stronger. I can see myself becoming an obsessive reader of the FT! I am pretty cautious about finances so I would prefer a sterling wage to be honest even if we lost out in the short term, but I don't think that is an option.

To be honest, I feel very relieved and grateful that a good job is to be had which will allow us to stay put. I think that selling the house would be very difficult at the moment.
