Hi
I've been a SAHM for 2 years after ds2 and had my first interview yesterday. It went very well. Problem is that it's a full-time post and I was comeletely up front about wanting part-time hours. We chatted at the interview, they asked how many hours I was thinking about and I said 18-20. They said that if they had another part-time applicaant would I be OK with 2 long days and half a day (which I said was completely OK) ...they then threw up a suggestion of maybe working an additional 4 hrs form home in addition to 20 in the office as a way of getting more hours from me.
My problem is this - I'm calculating the working hours and trying to work out the best pattern, but when I say calculate 9-5pm, do I have to take an hour off this for lunch(which I probably won't use) I know employers have to legally say that you have breaks etc. ?
So is this an 8 hr day or is it just a 7 hour day?
I was thinking of the following pattern:
Monday 9-4
Tues 9-4
Wed 9-1
I calculate this as 20 hours - am I right?

I know this sounds so silly, but I just want to make sure that if they ring back and offer me the post I don't agree to it based on erroneous calculations and end up working more that I wanted.
TIA

that is 18 hours

Mon 9-4 = 7 hours
Tues 9-4 = 7 hours
Wed 9-1 =4 hours

=18 hours

Even without breaks that only adds up to 18 hours. Legally you need to take a break (I think) - but at my work this is only 30 minutes.

I would think you would need to do 2 x 9-4 and one x 9-4.30

Good luck

bugger - I wrote the wrong list down....yes that was my 18 hrs option.
The 20 hours option has me finishing at 5 on the Mon and Tues.
Sorry !
But you've ansered my question anyway - I'm OK to count it as continuous hours and don't have to take an hour off for lunch?
It's all taken as part of the working hours/day?

So if I do
mon 9-4, Tues 9-4, Wed 9-3 and then 3 hours from home on the Thurs that would be 24.
Hmmmmmm it's do-able - I would still be there to collect from school for 3 days of the week.

feck I've done it again
Mon 9-5,
Tues 9-5,
wed 9-3
and 3 hours from home = 24.

are they going to leave it to you to decide the hours? what about the other part timer? will you not have to cover the full week between you?

smoggie · 05/11/2008 13:50

This additional 4 hrs from home option is if they don't get another part-timer.
I took it as a positive that in teh interview they were coming up with suggestions of how I could work some more hours if they needed.

If they have another p/t applicant then it's a straight 2 1/2 days splitting the week with the half day as the crossover day.

They are very unlikely to allow you to work straight through lunch as part of your hours, apart from anything else legally you must have at least 20minutes break in a 6 hour period.

You will need to find out what the normal arrangements are for lunch there and if you want to vary that, you will need to ask them if they will allow you to do that. We can only speculate.

You could come up with a number of variations based on an hour for lunch and some with half an hour for lunch. Or you could just ring them and ask. Say you are working out some options for hours and would like to know their thoughts about lunch, how long is necessary in a day of x hours long.
