Im really interested in this type of job, but would it be possible being a single mum of a 3 1/2 year old?

does anyone else work as a prison officer and have trouble juggling shifts and childcare?

I have a vague notion that Hulababy works in a prison.

Maybe completely wrong, but it's ringing a distant bell.

weepootle · 03/11/2008 20:13

I'm sure Hulababy does work in a prison but think it may be as an education advisor or something.

Hulababy · 03/11/2008 20:17

Yes, I work in a prison but not as a prison officer.

Have a look on the HMPS website.

You would generally be expected to work shifts including nights and weekends plus bank holidays.

"As a prison officer you will be expected to work a variety of shifts, including nights, weekends and some long days. Normal weekly working hours average 39 hours over the shift cycle, net of meal breaks."

Flexible working conditions may be avaialble, but not sure how well recieved requests are.

"Please note that most prison service posts are open to part-time and job share applicants."

juicychops - have you also looked at all the psychologist jobs in the Prison Service?

juicychops · 05/11/2008 13:43

i just searched all te current job vacancies in my area. there wasn;t any psychology related vacancies that i would be qualified for as i dont have my degree yet

Sorry for any confusion - I was thinking more about future possibilities, when you have your degree, than current vacancies. I'm sure you've seen that HMPS is one of the biggest employers of psychologists, in different roles.
