of course going through my mind is one of the slides could be of a moodboard

Actually I think it matters more what you say, how you say it and how you engage with the interviewers. If they have a preferred method of presenting then they can train that easily. You need to wow them with your passion, enthusiasm and knowledge.

Use whichever method you feel most comfortable with, I'd say.

llareggub · 04/10/2008 20:56

But if you need any photoshop expertise, let me know! DH is very obliging.

McDreamy · 04/10/2008 20:56

If you want to turn the slide off momentarily to stop them being distracted on powerpoint just press w or b for a white or black screen and then w or b again to go back to your presentation but you probably knew that! Good luck though

zippitippitoes · 04/10/2008 20:58

yes i was thinking it is what you say and how

very much like the dragons den thing

we haste what you say but you say it well and we could work with you

or your props fell apaert but you were confident and reassuring

its just easier to focus on the delivery method

zippitippitoes · 04/10/2008 20:59

i have had the same thinking abiout the idea i present

they arent buying my idea they are buying my ability to make them in terested

OP posts:
zippitippitoes · 08/10/2008 18:08

well i have finished it pending my dd1 pulling it to bits and the interview is tomorrow

i did so much research most of which i had to restrain myself from using and just pitching a main idea which for me is quite hard

so thank you

i have 10 slides but may do one more

This is very important Zippi:

make sure you practise it with the sound turned on on your computer so you are 100% certain there are no whizzy sound effects that will appear if your computer doesn't have sound and the one you use does.

The first time I did a lecture with ppt it was in a lecture theatre with surround sound and I had composed it in my office with no loudspeakers. Every time I changed slides there was the sound of a car crashing and a window smashing

zippitippitoes · 08/10/2008 18:27

oh there is no sound on my pc as the sound card makes it crash

but i have had to do it with open office so i am taking my own laptop

will that wiork?

i imagine they wont be able to open it otherwise

i am also taking hand out version and sticking it on two boards just in case

OP posts:
Kathyis6incheshigh · 08/10/2008 18:28

Yes, that should be fine.
Good luck!!!!!

zippitippitoes · 08/10/2008 18:28

i only have to present it to two guys..i imagine they will be looking at laptop

if i didnt t\ke mine it says they have laptop, flipchart and ohp

OP posts:
zippitippitoes · 08/10/2008 18:29

thank you

i am quite pleased with my ideas so i feel i have done my best

it has however made me completely forget to thinbk about actually preparoing for the interview

One thing that works really well IME is to have all the ppt slides printed out individually and holes punched in them, then you have a ring binder turned inside out IYSWIM and use it to flip through the slides.
(Our students have to do a presentation and they're allowed visual aids but not Powerpoint because of taking too long to set up, and one student did it this way, which I thought was really neat and worked far better than having it printed in handout format or stuck to a big board.)

BecauseImAWitch · 08/10/2008 18:33

How long have you got for your presentation, zippi?

We always work on the rule of thumb of 2 minutes per slide - which would make it a 20 minute presentation.

And if you've cut all extraneous stuff out of each slide, sometimes you will need more than 2 minutes per slide.

But above all, good luck!

zippitippitoes · 08/10/2008 18:53

ahright i shall think about that

my dd1 has just rung me and completely told me to change it

she said it didnt tell a coherent story and i had to address directly each point

in the brief

so looks like i have to re do it

OP posts:
priceyp · 08/10/2008 19:05

the ring binder thing is a really good idea. Also write prompts on there too such as "click", then you will know when to move onto the next slide while you are still talking about the previous one. Take your laptop and disk or pen drive with you just incase your version of p/point isn't compatable. Also don't appear to be reading off the p/point. Make sure the slides highlight your presentation not dominate. Practise, practise, practise (sp) and you'll be fine! Even the dog will know it inside out.

Good luck

zippitippitoes · 08/10/2008 20:41

dd1 has redone it

i am panicking somewhat about how i will use my laptop but have 8 slides

not much on them...so less chance to crib

she has removed all my hedge betting stuff which i had in in case they didnt like an idea there would be some other stuff for them to like

so now it is terrifyingly focussed and spare

i have to make a mood board to go with it i think

i shall look like a dog as i shall not sleep have to wash my hair etc

and review my cv and the job spec

i know i shall be so nervous i havent done a presentation like this before never mind with technology

The key thing is that the slides show the edited points. Not too much on each slide. Keep it simple and and use it like a reminder card to prompt you to talk about each point in more detail. Ensure the fonts are consistent across all the slides so it doesn't look untidy. Will you have to stand up whilst you present? If so, stand still and use your hands to emphasise each point. (When we did training in this, one girl was stood on one leg all the way through - but never even realised)

midnightexpress · 08/10/2008 21:03

Terrifyingly spare + mood board sounds good to me - shows off your competence with the technology/presentation side of things, and your creativity.

Keep the ppt to a minimum so they're looking at you and not the screen.

Don't use any fancy colours/fonts/animation and (especially) sound effects - v distracting for the audience.

The old adage:

Say what you're going to say
Say it
Say what you've said

is quite a good one.

And try to do a dry run with someone watching - ask them to look and see if you have any funny nervous habits. I had a student who clicked the button on his biro all through a 10 min presentation and another who pulled the linings of his pockets in and out of his pockets all the way through (quite oblivious to the fact that they were doing it of course, but very distracting for the audience).

zippitippitoes · 08/10/2008 21:22

i have cleaned my laptop too

OP posts:
zippitippitoes · 08/10/2008 21:24

it is quite minimal...all the work i have done seems to have been edited out

unfortunately it has quite possibly been edited out of my brain too

i will be on one foot rocking and fidgetting

I still have to do the mood board

but might go and have a shower first

i am not feeling especially creative it is going to be a bit playschool i think

OP posts:
Kathyis6incheshigh · 09/10/2008 08:39

Stop putting yourself down even on here - seriously - get yourself in the mood by saying how good you will be.
What you have done sounds fab and spot on - top marks your dd. (Just shows it's always good to have a competent support team behind you )

zippitippitoes · 10/10/2008 09:57

it went quite well i think

thank you
