Bookkeepers, help please regarding ICB Membership

I have a degree in Business studies (finance specialisation) attained in 1982

I have worked in the IT industry for over 20 years, installing, supporting and training users in accounting and payroll systems over that time. So I am very familiar with accounting techniques and procedures, and can still turn my hand to manual bookkeeping when required, up to producing a balance sheet.

Now I offer bookkeeping services and accounting system support to small businesses through my own business. I think maybe I need to get professional accreditation (and it will help with Money Laundering Regs)

I realise that my past experience offers me no exemptions from the exam structure, but I don?t think I need to do a course. Although I?m sure I?ve picked up a few bad habits along the way, I think that I would be able to get through with some reading.

Can anyone suggest suitable textbooks/practice materials to prepare me for at least level 1 and level 2?

Hi, there are a couple of textbooks I ca recommend.

Mastering Accounting Skills by Margaret Nicholson or Business Accounting by Frank Wood and Alan Sangster

Have you tried Level 1 OCR bookkeeping ISBN 1-872962-87-4. You can also do a bookkeeping course through the Institute of Bookkeepers -distant learning. Look also at the AAT courses on line. I know the Open University will start a new course in introduction to bookkeeping/accuntancy in 2009. check it out!
