At the moment I do the former, but am about to move DS to a nursery and am vaguely wondering about changing my days. Anyone got views on the pros and cons?

If you work mondays the nursery will probably expect you to pay for bank holiday mondays still even though they will be closed, but your employer might only give you 3/5 of the bank holidays, meaning you either have to use your holiday entitlement for the other 2/5 or pay for extra nursery sessions to make up the time. But I really like mondays at my DS's nursery - lots of parents are put off by the monday thing so it tends to be a much quieter day which is nice if we've had a busy weekend.

That's a good point

I'm pretty sure my employer gives all bank holidays, but I like the idea that Mondays are nice and quiet. Actually at the moment I quite like finishing work on a Wednesday and having the rest of the week off - psychologically it feels like a holiday (sort of)

If you use nursery then mon is probably good b/c it's quiet day but I have just changed from MTW to TWT and I love it! So much better having monday to sort house and kids out after busy weekend and I feel it's more relaxiing for the kids - also I don't get to look after them two days in a row by myself!

I have done TWT for over 7 years now. The bank holiday thing does depend largely on how your empployer operates. I think it is law these days that they have to be pro-rata'd. I get 4.8 days as bank holidays. The .8 works out OK as I get 16.2 days as annual leave.

For me it is quite good having Mondays off because since DS has been at school a lot of the inset days are on Mondays. I also think having Mondays off gives a gradual start to the week. OK DH has to be at work, and DS and DD have to be at school but I am not rushing out of the house at 7.20 am so I am there to sort everyone else out.

I love Sunday nights - knowing I dont have to go back in on a Monday, the same after a holiday knowing I have Monday to catch up. Plus most teacher training days are on a Monday and never have to worry about finding cover to go to work - we just have a lovely day together either out or snuggled under the duvet.

I work Tuesday, Wednesday and half day Thursday.

Enjoy having Friday get food shopping etc, housework or have a long weekend and go away at 3.30 after school on a friday night.

ooo- this is useful advice folks as I am in the lucky position of being able to choose which days I go back to work I need to work 3 days - I am contemplating Mon, Wed and Fri at work. The problem with doing 3 straight days (e.g. mon tue wed)is that it's just too much time away from the kids ( and too much time in nursery) all at once - particularly for DS2 who will be 7 months old when I go back.

but do you think I will find my whole week (workwise) totally disjointed only being in every other day? maybe I should do mon, tue and thur? any advice?

jollyoldstnickschick · 03/10/2008 19:50

tues weds thurs sounds ideal to me

fruitcorner · 03/10/2008 20:23

3 straight days may be less disruptive for the children than you being at work every other day - on the other hand every other day may be better for work as you are only out of the office for one day at a time but I wouldnt find my days off so relaxing!

I now do T, W, Th - change enforced by new boss after upteen years of doing W, Th, Fri. I was reluctant to change but now I actually prefer new pattern.Friday = getting house etc ready for the weekend; Monday = sorting out after the weekend and preparing meals for later in the week.

MOn, Tues, Wed works brillinatly, I think.
For DS, Mondays are quieter at nursery and for me, I get all my work over and done with. Plus I get all bank holidays off.
