I have to do internships as part of my degree. I haven't technically started my degree yet (I deferred), but did one in Italy this summer. It should have been great, but tbh I hated it-I had dd in tow (was asked not to bring her-three weeks in a foreign country with no dd-what am I meant to do with her?!?) so had to pay £600 in childcare out of my own savings, and pay for our meals, accommodation, travel etc, while I was "given the opportunity to work for them"

Dd's nursery was 1 1/2 hours from the office, and opened at 8.15, so I didn't get into work until 9.45am, and then had to leave at 3.15 to pick her up at 4.45pm. Needless to say I had PILES of work to finish when I came back to the UK. The second we got back dd started half day school, so I only had two hours a day in which to do some of this work, and then we had a huge housing problem, so I have missed the deadline to hand the work in. I am terrible with deadlines, and this is just another straw in my tutor's hat, as it is another deadline I have missed (I missed loads last year as I had a breakdown). What are my chances of getting a good job at the end of my degree if I get a bad reference from them? I want to do normal, english internships from now on, as I can't deal with being away with dd and doing the work. Help!

PLP, it sounds like you've had a really rough time and some tough breaks. What is your degree? It sounds to me like you might do well to get in touch with the university and talk to the student advisers or counsellors and talk things through. Is it possible to just do English internships?

The good news is, as you haven't started the degree properly yet, that you still have three years to build up a good standard and reputation. So don't despair yet - there is plenty of time to put things right, but it sounds as though you need some support and advice in order to do so.

Thanks BTM-I just feel so inadequate all the time as other interns stay until 8, hand in book-sized reports, have a whale of a time and are the blue eyed boys, while I always come up short. I'm doing law, so there are plenty around in London, which I can thankfully get to each day!

Can you talk to your tutor and explained your problems?
