CRB Check does every potential employer need to request one

This may seem like a daft question but I am in the process of looking for another job in a care setting and this sort of post will require me to have a crb check.
One employer has asked me to go on the bank with them until a suitable job comes up for me although god knows when that will be and they have had £40 off me to cover the cost.
However they said it would take about a month for it to come through and I think it has almost been that now.
However I am still looking at other jobs as I really do need a permanent job and I have a couple of interviews lined up but I really don,t want to be handing over £40 again if the employer does not pay for it.
Can I explain that there has already been a request from another employer for a crb on me and I should be able to use that when I get my copy, or does every potential employer need to request one for themselves.
At the same time I don,t want to put employers off by them thinking that I could leave any time if I get a job elsewhere.

Hi I'm an RGN and am experiencing this too!

I joined 4 agencies,and have had to have 4 CRB's done,I have applied to the Hospital bank, and had a CRB done.

Apparently:

You have to have a CRB with the Employers name on it.

In my case,there was one "going through" at the same time as another one was started!

It takes roughly 6 weeks,but you can check the status by making a note of the reference number when they send it to you to fill in,and go on the website,and type it in.

The other bit of bad news is they are Annual requirements!!!

So every year you have to fork out for it.
In certain cases the Employers will pay for each one,or the Agency,but usually not unless its NHS.One of the Agencies I am with allow you to accrue points for each hour you work,and you can use them to "pay" for a CRB,or uniform or Study days.

Oh yeah,one last thing is the mandatory Study days such as Moving and Handling,you sometimes have to pay for them as well,and they need renewing Annually too!

Oh heck I can,t afford to keep being £40 out of pocket its ridiculous, you'd think that one would be enough to show everyone and of course it would mean that you wouldn,t have to wait so long to start best for the employer as well I should imagine.
I didn,t know that about the reference number thanks for that I will look out for that now.

Alot of Employers are happy to let you start work whilst the new one is in process,provided they have seen the original/have a copy of.

At least if you can start earning you can "afford" to pay,but the first ones are a nightmare as you really are "out-of-pocket".

They say that the CRB is out of date the minute its produced,as you could easily be "committing a crime" whilst its being processed,and then they'd be no record of this untill you needed a new one.

I understand the need for them,but this system is stupid IMO.

The reason that each employer requires a new disclosure is because a CRB disclosure is a snap shot in time and employers are not informed if someone commits an offence after getting the check done.

Most employers will only ask for checks to be done once every three years, however when working with staffing agencies they may ask you to get checks done annually because the Protection of Children Act states that any employer taking on agency staff should have had a check against the childrenâ??s registers within the last 12 months.

There is a new system coming in August of 2009 with the full introduction of the Independent Safeguarding Authority, this scheme will run alongside the CRB and will mean anyone working in a regulated role or environment will need both a CRB and registration to this scheme. With the new system you will pay approx £62 and this will get you are CRB check and registration to the scheme which essentially means that you will be put onto an approved register with the ISA of people that can work with children or vulnerable people for the rest of your life. (Unless removed)

With the new scheme employer will be informed if an employee commits an offence which then bars them from the list. You can register for only an ISA registration and donâ??t have to get another CRB check if you already have one, but the cost is the same and the CRB have to carry out all the checks again anyway.

After August next year if an employer takes on new staff without them being on the new register it will be an offence and an employer could face a fine of up to £5000. The good thing though as I said is once someone is on the scheme they have a pin number so when a persons moves to a new employer they will give them their number and the employer can register their interest in employing the applicant online with the ISA and check if they are on the register and then in theory hire them straight away. #

This system looks to overcome the problem of someone needing a new CRB check for every job but I think the CRB stats are something like 60,000 people have been denied employment with employers since the CRB began and these were people that were not bared from working with children or vulnerable people but employers considered the offences were serious enough to deny employment and essentially the only way you will find this out is by doing a new CRB check. An example the ISA gave was if you have a school bus driver registered to the scheme and he is convicted of drink driving outside of work, then this will not ban him from working with children and the employer would not be informed.

I think it is terrible that you are being asked to pay for your CRB check. Have you considered applying for local authority work? You wouldn't have to pay for your check and the terms and conditions of employment are generally quite good.

Yes, each employer.

Most will let you start work with an existing CRB, but they will apply for a new one for you.
