Does anyone know how I can gain employment as a Medical Transcriptionist?

Hi Everyone,

I've tried searching the net, but landing only on all those sites that just take you to link after link.

I type just over 100 words a minute (very accurately) and have qualifications in medical terminology. The post of "Medical Transcriptionist" working from home sounds ideal for me and I wonder if anyone could advise how I might get such a position?

Many thanks in advance.

No idea, perhaps via an agency specialising in medical admin staff ?

If you expand on your med terminology quals with audio transcription and RSAIII then you can get a job as a snr medical secretary

Why don't you contact some of the specialist pharmaceutical market research agencies? They will want transcribers (not transcriptionists!) for depth interviews and group discussions.

Contact the Market Research Society and they should be able to help with a list of appropriate agencies

Or try here:

Research Buyers Guide

You have to register, but it's free - and then you can search for types of agency.

Thanks BecauseImWorthIt and NomDePlume. I work full time currently as an office manager for a medical software company, but just looking to do some additional work in the evenings to supplement my income.

Transcription seems ideal as I also have some audio typing qualifications (from years back) and some very old Pitman qualifications.

If you go down the transcribing route, what kind of kit do you have at home?

Do you have a transcribing machine? If not, it will make transcribing very difficult and take you much longer.

And if you have (or haven't and you're going to buy one) is it based on standard audio tapes or digital? Some research agencies (and viewing facilities) are still using standard audio tapes but I think it's fair to say that there is a shift towards digital equipment.

If you haven't got any equipment yet, when you talk to an agency and if they're interested, ask them what they use.

Just to give you an idea of what to expect, most agencies run group discussions that last 1.5 hours. Our typical group will last 2 hours, but we often run groups of 2.5 or even 3 hours. A group consists of a moderator and 8 participants (apologies if you know this, but if you don't it might be useful) - and there is often a tendency for people to talk over each other/interrupt, etc - and when transcribing it can often be quite difficult to pick up all the strands of conversation. And 9 people will usually speak at different volumes, with different accents, etc - so transcribing a group isn't always an easy thing!

As in other fields, there is more and more pressure to turn things round quickly, which means that we are increasingly demanding of our transcribers. So for example, if I sent you a recording of a 1.5 hour group on a Monday I would hope that you could get it back to me by Wednesday.

And often we do groups on Thursday (and sometimes during the day on Friday) so would expect these back on Monday.

So - make sure you have enough time in the evening to do this, and also be prepared to work at the weekend!

Hope this helps. If you want to know more, CAT me and we can chat off board. (We do occasionally do pharma research, but not very often)

Scottishmum31 · 02/09/2008 15:19

Thanks BIWI, I haven't yet contacted any of the research type companies yet but have contacted a few transcription companies today and sent them my c.v.

I haven't purchased a transcription kit yet but most companies I have read information on seem to want digital equipment, so that is what I was going to purchase.

Thanks again for your advice, its really appreciated!

Catherine

Becauseimworthit - can I chat to you offline? I'm not sure if I can CAT you - I'll try it now.

BecauseImWorthIt · 02/09/2008 18:10

yes of course GG - if you cant CAT, my e-mail is thestarrs at btconnect dot com

Gobbledigook · 02/09/2008 18:59

You're a star, thanks - I have emailed you!

BecauseImWorthIt · 02/09/2008 20:24

You have mail!

surprisenumber3 · 03/09/2008 12:43

try dict8, no equipment needed, work as and when you want, i've done it for ages!

Gobbledigook · 03/09/2008 17:38

surprisenumber3 - on the application page it seems quite strict about only wanting applications from medical secretaries. I have never been a medical secretary but have a medical background and have worked in pharmaceuticals/medicine analysing and transcribing data for the last 7 years. Do you think it's worth me applying?!

surprisenumber3 · 03/09/2008 18:01

It might be worth dropping them an email and asking. They are usually quite helpful.

I have actually just left them as I got offered something else (very similar but for a local company), but they were always very nice when I called.

Gobbledigook · 03/09/2008 18:40

I actually filled out the form and just put down my experience etc in the comments box so I hope they read it rather than discarding it out of hand straight away.

It would just be quite good to be able to dip into there when I've got quieter periods - especially now all of my children are at school and I have more time!

Scottishmum31 · 03/09/2008 22:47

Thanks surprisenumber3 will try them now. Good luck Gobbledigook. I'll let you know if I get success anywhere, would you be so kind as to do the same?

I will scottishmum - that would be nice.

Scottishmum31 · 04/09/2008 12:12

Gobbledigook, have you tried Voicescript? I got a really swift reply from them, which was a no unfortunately, but down to the fact I can't really offer daytime hours to them. Worth a try?

Thanks for that scottishmum.

I got a reply from dict8 which said I didn't meet their requirements in terms of experience. I think I must be missing something because medical secretaries are not medically trained or educated are they? My MIL is one and she certainly isn't. So, no, I have not transcribed dictated letters but I transcribe very technical medical and pharmaceutical interviews with all sorts of specialities all the time! There is obviously something else they are looking for so fair enough.

It will be interesting to see what the voicescript one says. I'll let you know!

Scottishmum31 · 04/09/2008 23:45

I got the same reply from dict8 too . Oh well, they're the ones missing out. Good luck with voicescript though!

Have just completed a five minute test script for a company tonight. It was an American conference call and wasn't too bad, there was the odd place name mentioned that I had to google, but other than that I did ok, even with the American financial references. As it was an American company I used American English spellings for words such as centre (center) and I hope that was the correct thing to do?!

I have to say I found it very difficult to transcribe without a foot pedal and just using windows media player, it took me about ten times longer to do as I had to stop and keep clicking on the wmp buttons, very very frustrating. I have ordered myself an olympus transcribing kit though, which should be here by Monday!

If you want to email me I'll let you know who they were as they responded really quickly. Just don't want to expose them to the world or they'll get inundated and I won't get a job! Email is catherinelaurie at tiscali dot co dot uk.

Just off to school - will email you in a bit!

surprisenumber3 · 05/09/2008 11:02

Hi gobbledigook, I did go to medical secretarial school (hospital based) for 2 years to gain my AMSPAR. So yes, I did 'train' to be a medical secretary.

I contact voicescript too but the hours they wanted me to do I just couldn't commit to, it was a lot!

Gobbledigook · 05/09/2008 11:04

Oh OK, that's interesting, I didn't know that.

Scottishmum31 · 05/09/2008 15:38

I have medical terminology qualifications and work for two doctors and they still didn't want me . Seems you need to have the actual job title of "medical secretary" to get a job with them

OP posts:
Gobbledigook · 05/09/2008 19:10

Bizarre isn't it?!

I bet they wouldn't even employ a doctor! Ha ha!

Silver007 · 23/12/2008 03:56

Hi,

You may want to check this site -
