Working from home with a toddler

Hi,
I intend to resume work in two months when my boy is 7 m. I will work from home, glued to my PC screen.
Do you think it is possible to do so with a calm baby in the background and therefore avoid all problems of childcare or is it completely unrealistic and should I get a grip and arrange something now, childcare-wise?

I worked from home for the last four years, until ds went to school. Having a toddler at home when you're trying to concentrate is a nightmare! you generally don't get much work done and then spend all evening on the pc trying to catch up. If I was to do it again, I'd try a mixture of morning/afternoons in childcare. Once ds went to pre-school (mornings only), aged 2, it was a lot easier HTH

Geekgirl and PHDMum, I hope you still get to read this. I did a Postgrad Diploma in Translation and then worked as a translator, Got a job in a large comapny which then took me in other directions, so I only did a bit of translation on the side.

Now I'm not working anywhere else so have sent out lots and lots of CVs to agencies - you will get very few responses and have to keep your rates pretty low to be competitive, especially if you are a beginner I guess. I'm also relying on previous contacts.

I was also going to recommend ProZ.com, it seems to be the best of the translation websites. Also worth a try are www.linguistfinder.com and www.translatorscafe.com. All these allow you to post your profile and they post freelance job offers which you can bid for.

Hope this helps, let me know if you need any more info.

CQ those websites sound really useful, will look in to posting when I have more time. Hopefully a PhD in MOdLangs will preclude the need to have a DipTrans ...

Thanks v much for the info.
