interested to compare childcare costs across the country ... pls post what part of the country you are in, what sort of childcare you have (nursery, childminder, daynursery etc) and how much per hour or per day you have to pay.

I live in Hertforshire and have to pay £185 per week (£801pm)for a full-time daycare nursery. Daylight robbery!!

prufrock · 27/01/2003 16:40

£1,145/month for full time nursery in London. If it wasn't that I hate looking after my daughter I wouldn't bather working

elliott · 27/01/2003 16:45

one of the advantages of living 'oop north' (nearly in Scotland!) - I pay £350 for 3 days nursery, nappies and all food included. It is a co-operative though and therefore less expensive than the for-profit nurseries in our area.
I'll bet even the expensive ones don't overpay their staff!!

Philippat · 27/01/2003 16:57

£27 a day (not including food or nappies). West Midlands. Most expensive one in our area as in posh rural area not urban (isn't that typical, still, you get what you pay for). DD only goes 3 days a week but I don't think there's a full time discount.

Half price days for notified holidays.

Dd is 15 months - it gets cheaper as they get older.

jac34 · 27/01/2003 17:02

We live in Cardiff, Wales.
We pay £21.64 per day for each of the boys.
It is a local government Day Nursery, and is subsidsed by DH's employer (local government).
This is quite cheap in our area, the creche where I work ( a large University Hospital), was £25 per day, each and that was 4 years ago, when I was first looking for child care.

Alibubbles · 27/01/2003 17:05

Busy Bees Day Nursery in St Albans, £50 a day £28 a half day! ( and we have 10 nurseries in the city offering over 1000 places!!

Childminders £3.50 - £5 an hour depending on number of hours, average is £4 an hour.

Popparoo · 27/01/2003 17:17

Cambridgeshire nurseries I believe are around £500 to £600 a month for a full time place, incl nappies and food (although I don't use one myself so am happy to be corrected by anyone that does!!!)

cazzybabs · 27/01/2003 17:20

DD does to a day nursery where it is £620 there abouts per calander month full time (not including nappies), but it does get (a little) cheaper when she is older and we don't get any money off for time she is not there and we have to pay a retainer to ensure she got her place for 4 months!!!! - such is the shortage of places in cambridge....

Zoe · 27/01/2003 18:43

We pay £30 day for nursery - we have to provide nappies but they feed him two meals (nice ones too, they just won an award) and all drinks once he was on cow's milk. This is in Trafford, near Manchester

GillW · 27/01/2003 18:52

£510 a month for a full time nursery in Warwickshire (including food/drinks but not nappies), which is a discount on the day/half-day/by the hour rates. We still pay the same for holidays, etc. There is a 10% reduction for the 2nd (or more) if you have more than one with them full time.

megg · 27/01/2003 19:01

Portsmouth, for my ds (3yrs) its £17.70 a day (9am to 4pm) but you have to provide your own meals and nappies. From when I was researching for ds they all seem to charge roughly the same (£24 for a baby per day going down as they get older). We have to pay when ds isn't there although we do get a 2 week payment break a year for a main holiday all other times we have to pay. Now he's 3 he gets those five sessions a week (term-time) paid for by the Government which is nice.

ANGELMOTHER · 27/01/2003 19:19

Recently converted to SAHM as amongst various reasons childcare costs were driving me mad. Kingston avrge £4.50 hrly as Dd was divided between childminder and Montessori ran to approx £850 mthly

willow2 · 27/01/2003 19:54

SW London daycare - £440 for three full days per week. Includes food but didn't include nappies.

Claireandrich · 27/01/2003 20:35

I live in Sheffield but DD goes to nursery near my work in Doncaster. Doncaster is quite a lot cheaper than Sheffield too!

We use a private day nursery 2 days a week. DD is 9 months. I pay £25 a day, plus £2.50 to be able to drop her off before 8am. This includes food but not nappies and milk.

In Sheffield it was between £30-£50 a day, getting cheaper the more days you went each week. Oh, and whether you want them to begin being taught French!!!

We live in rural Suffolk - the going rate for childminding is £2.50 per hour (you provide your own meals, drinks, nappies etc).

SofiaAmes · 27/01/2003 21:18

NW London....My childminder is 105/week on a yearly contract or 125/week on a month to month basis. She also gets paid holidays. She supplies breakfast (we're never there early enough) lunch and snacks and lots of love, I supply the nappies and 2 noisy children. The nurseries I've been looking at seem to be about the same price.

Cecilia · 27/01/2003 22:04

Live in Staffordshire. Nursery costs for my dd (7 months) are - £23 per day or £3.60 an hour - meals provided.

clucks · 27/01/2003 23:17

SW London nursery, 50/day includes food and nappies.

mum2toby · 28/01/2003 08:19

Hi Ragdoll.

I live in Central Scotland. Ds is 19mths old and in private Nursery. I pay £24 per day. No meals/nappies/juice/Calpol etc are provided. The parent has to supply everything apart from the toys!!! The price is the same whether your child is 12 weeks or 5 years.

He loves it though and luckily we only have him there 3 days a week.

I was getting broody and enquired about the discount for having a 2nd child there and there is NO DISCOUNT....Gulp! I suddenly didn't feel very broody anymore!!

CookieMonster · 28/01/2003 08:28

I live in Leeds and pay £605 per month or £28.50 per day for dd to go full time to a private nursery. This will reduce to £573 per month or £27 per day when she is 2 next month. This is presumably because of the reduced ratio of staff per child required. Three meals and all drinks are provided but no nappies.

Dizzymummy · 28/01/2003 08:42

£460 a month based on a 3 day week (7:30 - 6:30). I supply food and nappies (London)

JaneyT · 28/01/2003 08:51

We pay £25.25 per child per day, live in Derbyshire, and have to provide nappies and wipes.

Don't get any reduced rates for holidays - or for having 2 children there.

However if you go full time its £110pw not £25 x 5, and you get 10% off if both your children go full time - mine don't so its £100 pw for 2 days.

titchy · 28/01/2003 09:08

About £35 a day for dd (4) and £38 for ds (2), less Nursery Education Grant for dd. This includes all meals, though they do tend to be of the chicken nuggets and chips variety, wipes for ds (but not nappies) and all activities (loads - dd recently started French and Yoga - and they only go 2 days a week!)

Bozza · 28/01/2003 09:24

£25 per day for DS (same rate for all ages) 3 days a week. This includes 3 meals plus snacks and the meals are "home-cooked" and varied eg shepherd's pie, chicken curry, various bakes etc. It doesn't include nappies, wipes etc or formula for babies. We get 3 weeks at half price if DS doesn't go ie for holidays although obviously in practice he has more time off than this. Somebody mentioned Calpol - they are not allowed to administer Calpol (or other painkillers) at any nurseries in our borough.

whellid · 28/01/2003 09:35

I'm in the south west and pay £2.20 / hour for a childminder, and don't pay for school holidays (dh is a teacher). Average round here is about £2.50 / hour.
