I did shift work when my two were very little including nigt shifts.

I worked part time so during the they were in a day care nursery DH and I had to do drop off and pick up sorund my shifts.

When I did nights I still used the day care nusery as I had to sleep , I used to drop them off at 8am , go to bed and pick up around 3pm .

At weekends if I was nights DH looked after them , I slpet in spare room with ear plugs in , he took them out most of the time . I would say I was knackered - especailly the first night shift as I had been up with them all day and if DH wasn't home ear;y enough I could never grab 40 wimks in the evening before work.

Evening shifts or late turns , again used to get in around 1am , but the time I had settled myself and got to slepp it was closer to 2am and then the kids would wake at 6am - again bloody knackered.

Probably not what you wanted to hear, but it worked for a while but I was tired.

mollysawally · 07/07/2008 17:49

Why do they have to get up so bloody early?!
I'm not good when tired, vry ratty and unmotivated, so not sure if it is a good idea for me really.
Have to have a long hard think

Perhaps give it a try and see how it works out , at least then you will know. Everyone and every child is differnt and I had two of them at the time age 2.5yrs and 7 months when I went back to work the second time .

CaptainUnderpants · 07/07/2008 17:54

Also to add , our quality of family life wasn't great - if I wasn't working at the weekend then Dh was to make up the time when he had to leave ear;ly to pick DC up or go in later to drop them off.

Howvever the money was nice

I'm on maternity leave and am halfway through it. I've chosen to take the whole year off.

I am dreading going back, but I have to, we can't get by otherwise.

I don't really like my job, i'm just stuck behind a counter scanning things through no chatting to the customers (they are mainly male and are miserable sods).

Its not very taxing on the brain, it's not alot of anything but I do get to watch alot of telly

shinyshoes · 07/07/2008 18:02

oh forgot to say it involves 2 evening shifts a week, (til 10.00pm) the other 2 shifts I finish at 5.30pm

bellavita · 07/07/2008 18:14

I do three evening shifts behind a bar in a village pub. On the Friday night of my shift, I get dressed up - tis my night out!

I work 7.00pm till midnight, get home about 12.05 and go to bed at around 12.45 as I need to wind down.

Does fit in with kids being off ill, but does not fit in when we have to do evening school stuff - DH has to do it by himself if it is one of my nights.

mellyonion · 07/07/2008 18:29

i work 4 evenings a week...5.30 til 10pm.....

it suits because i enjoy it, its well paid and i really want to be at home for my children during the day, but also, i'm constantly tired as i spend my only child free time (when they are almost in bed) working....i have no evening relaxation time really.

i rarely spend quality time talking to my dh...and we suffer for that.

there are pros and cons to it...don't underestimate the physcical effect it can have on you...

good luck!

(did you go back to ww btw mollysawally??)

mollysawally · 07/07/2008 18:45

Yes melly and its going well, I've got a long way to go but I definatly feel better now I've started.
Getting used to the points as well, tried a few ww meals as well and they're ok, good if I want to save points for a treat at the weekend!

good on you!
i'm back on it...have had a few lax weeks and have put on 5lbs!!!

lost two on my first week though, so back on track...phew!!!

have saved up todays points for a treat tonight.

bellavita · 07/07/2008 19:01

melly - are you going to the classes or do you just do it by yourself?

mellyonion · 07/07/2008 19:24

i lost nearly 3 stone by going religiously to classes......i found it a real support and focus.
this few lbs though am just doing myself....i've dug my books out and am back to scratch with it.

by writing everything down that passes my lips, i can see EXACTLY why i've put weight back on!! i have sayed at my goal for a year though to be fair....have just slipped this last month or two.... (magnum anyone? )

oops!

bellavita · 07/07/2008 19:50

DH looked up the points value for Magnums for me - just after I had eaten a white one. Something like 6.5 points . I stick to Mini Milks now at 0.5.

I am just a couple of pounds off goal (am a lifetime member from years back). I need to go to the meetings really, but I know what you mean writing everything down does help.
