Self-employed earning in another currency?

Does anyone do work for an overseas client and get paid in their currency? I'm trying to find out how to calculate, for tax purposes, what my income is in £s when I've been paid for some work in another currency. Obviously the exchange rate changes over time. I can't find anything about it on the Inland Revenue webpage. Anyone know or can point me to the page that would tell me?

either take the exchange rate on the date you issue the invoice, or the exchange rate you're charged by your bank (which should show on the statements). It's easier all round to insist on being paid in sterling though (then you don't get clobbered with the charges).

this page might help.

The page shrinkingviolet gave you is the one that you should use.

If you make up your own rate from wha\tever other source you find, the revenue will insist on re-calculating using their rates if you have a tax inspection.

I would keep a spreadsheet and total up your foreign currency income each month, converting that to sterling using HMRC's rate.
Then of course add those together at y/e, and that was your income.

Fantastic, thank you both.

Client used to pay in Sterling but then stopped. It's annoying because in all other respects I like working for them.
