Where do I get advice if I want to BUY a business??

I know this is probably a daft question, but I am really out of my depth!

My DP and I have only ever been employees - although my dad ran his own business and ended up bankrupt so not a great role model

We have 2 DD, our new addition is only a week old but I am resolute I don't want to go back to my boring old public sector desk job. DP isn't bothered about his job either, we would both like a change (and hopefully a move to a different part of the country)

To cut a long story short, we could end up with some capital later this year, so I am thinking about buying a business. have thought about setting up something myself, but to be honest haven't come up with any profitable ideas yet or anything I fancy. However the idea of buying a business really appeals.

Trouble is I haven't got a clue how to find out more and I need to start researching now if we're planning on doing ths in the next year or two. Not thinking about being the next Alan sugar, just maybe starting off with a small internet business to give me a feel for being my own boss, but ultimately progressing to buying a business with premises that can provide a living for me and DP.

I know there's places like business link, but all the info I can find is to help people starting up from scratch. Has anyone experience of buying an existing business, or know of where I can learn more?

Thanks for anyone who can help, I know I'm probably being very vague!

If you've no expereince you may want to consider a franchise as you will be supported by the organisation (basically you buy your own business but trade under a known name, e.g. McDonalds-however I don't think you want something that big!)
Choose one that is part of the British Franchise Organisation, just do google search to see what kind of franchises are available.

Thanks for the info, Daltons looks really useful. I don't fancy a franchise for some reason - would prefer a small business already underway which maybe the owner doesn't have time to invest - which I can grow and expand.
