On the spot upward appraisal not anonymous advice.

In a staff meeting yesterday and the boss sprung an upward appraisal questionnaire on us.
“No repercussions, be honest etc etc”
We had to write our names at the top, which I thought was ridiculous and contributed to it being a pointless exercise.
Is this normal? I wouldn’t have expected it to be standard HR procedure.
She is not a great boss btw.

your manager may be doing a course on leadership and needs 360o feedback and the point is they need to take the good, the bad and the ugly. Ask them why they need it. Even your manager is subject to scrutiny from upper leadership.

My question was regarding anonymity and standard protocols.
I fully understand she is subject to scrutiny at some level.

UPDATE ..We were told at yesterday’s senior staff meeting that in our next one to one meetings we would be discussing our appraisal with her?
Is this normal?
We were told there would be no follow up from it .

At this stage I think you need to do what will cause least harm to you.
I agree the way this has been handled is very poor and not a normal way of providing manager or 360 feedback.

So, look at what you said, then consider how to present it as best you can. If she really is that bad and this meeting won't actually change anything, then pick one tiny less positive thing and go deep on how well she rectified it, then segue straight into what she does well. She'll tick her box of "constructive criticism" then enjoy basking in the positive comments. Hopefully you'll use up your timeslot and be free (you may also want to try and go first in the list so it gets it done and she can forget about you).

She doesn't want to hear actual helpful feedback by the sound of it, so don't waste your breath trying to make it that.

I don’t have a copy of my questionnaire and I don’t know when my meeting is, so I’ll have to brazen it out.

Then just make up some generic comments and go with those. You will probably be pretty much on the nose anyway as it is the same person you are thinking about!

You'll also look super well prepared by having notes.

OR: Ask for a copy to be sure you are "remembering correctly"
