Band 6 non clinical nhs jobs

Hi all,

Just wondered if anyone can give me a bit of advice. I'm stagnating in a band 5 admin role. I like the job well enough but I've reached saturation point of what I can learn. After a lot of badgering, my manager has given me band 6 work which I can now say I've got experience in but ultimately I'm still on band 5 pay. There's no movement in my team and I'm limited to a specific geographical location.

What other adminy roles should I be looking at? I'm currently in knowledge management and have an information systems management degree. I've got a bit of project management experience but no Prince qualification or money to obtain it.

I can't afford to go back to uni but I don't really want to leave the nhs. I've looked at OD but there keen on a Mentoring qualification ILM Level 5 which I don't have.

I have a cipd diploma in HR which is classed as a leadership qualification but I'm not overly keen on being in management.

Any suggestions or experiences people have had would be greatly appreciated.

I assumed they were for apprenticeships in band 2 kind of roles, but maybe I'm wrong I'll check them out. Thanks!

I’m a band 4 and I’m doing a management diploma thing and I’m 46 and already have a degree as this is for nhs/medical setting worth a look

Apprenticeships go up to 8a, I’ve got an 8a, 6 and 5 and 4 all on apprenticeships in my teams.

have you discussed this in your 121s and PDR? I’m an 8c in operational management and I regularly take some of my juniors with me for the day to see what senior ops is like - it’s useful as I interact with so many other admin/management roles - booking teams, admission teams, governance teams, transformation, audit, finance, HR, various specialty ops teams, the ICB etc. can you reach out to someone in ops? Or any one really and ask for shadowing opportunities.

at the moment though there’s little movement and opportunities for new roles at the moment as nhs has real tight grip on advertising roles, lots of internal reorganisation and moving around means there’s not as many jobs out there right now

youre doing all the right things.

have you looked at the NHS leadership academy - Mary seacole programme etc

Yes currently doing the Edward Jenner. I've mentioned it hundreds of times in my 1:1 and appraisals but my manager is bit uninspiring and says I'm doing everything I can but never seems to suggest anything it's always me that asks to work on project ect. They also come back with a "yer I guess you could". I wish they were a bit more motivated to guide me professionally.

I will definitely checkout the apprenticeships, I had previously written them off assuming employees with degrees were not allowed to enrol, but clearly I've missed a trick.

I'm definitely going to ask about shadowing another department, they can only say no so worth a shot!

Was it hard to get on to?

Not really they sent an email to all staff asking them for people who’d be interested and I emailed them back and I got a space. I’m guessing it varies from trust to trust and availability etc… but give them a call definately - nothing ventured nothing gained - or apply for a secondment perhaps?

Catsonskis · 19/08/2026 19:39

Try reaching out to Proud2bOps or Proud2bAdmin nhs networks. There’s a mentorship program with proud2bOps for sure (I’m a mentor on their programme) but presume there’s one for P2BAdmin too. Theres regional groups/meetings/conferences for them both.

tbh there is only so much your manager can do for you other than helping find you shadowing opportunities. I’d reach out to some of the directorate/service managers for something in Ops, someone within the booking team, someone in a governance role and someone from transformation/PMO and see if you can get some time with them.

we had someone shadow a band 6 on their afternoon off for 3 months as a band 4, when a band 6 position came up they were the ideal candidate with experience and had shown dedication. No one could touch them in interview. I’m not staying give up your free time, but most managers SHOULD support some released time to spend will on development. If not, see if you can use study leave

I've kept my eyes peeled for secondments but nothing suitable yet. I'll definitely do some research on apprentiships though!
