Based on others experiences… is a scheduled phone call a rejection?

I’ve recently been through four interview rounds: One with the recruitment team, one with potential colleagues, a two hour test and a final one with the department head on Monday.

Today the recruitment lady emailed me to schedule a call for tomorrow… Am I right to think this is likely bad news and she is calling to reject me? The wording she used was ‘to provide update following your final interview’.

It all just feels like bad vibes to me which sucks as I really needed the job :(

I don't think so. All my rejections have always been emails.

Even after lots of interview rounds?

My experience too is that rejection is normally done via email, good luck!

TheBirdintheCave · 07/08/2026 10:35

I was right, it was a rejection. So pointless. Why call me?

I'm sorry to hear that, that's so annoying. Gets your hopes up and everything.

Yeah exactly :( Plus I had no idea what to say as obviously I was disappointed. I’m also very sick right now and looking after my two year old who is potty training so I really did not have time for a call that could have been an email.

I’m sorry to hear that. The same thing happened to me not so long ago. I got my hopes up when I saw a missed call from them as I didn’t think a rejection would be a phone call! But low and behold, it was to say I did well but they won’t be taking it forward at this time.

To give feedback and allow you to ask questions?
I’m sorry for the rejection.
I’m applying for jobs right now. It’s depressing and dehumanising.

They could do that in an email though. Would have been preferable to me being a bit blindsided by it 😆 It’s pretty crappy as I need a job but its not like it was my dream job or anything.

My last rejection was via email but did offer me a Teams feedback call. That was ideal. I agree, it would be hard to make the most from a feedback discussion when someone's just rejected you. Even if it wasn't your dream job, a rejection is never nice.
On-fucking-wards!

FreddysFingers · 07/08/2026 13:36

My experience is a phone call is usually an offer OP, good luck and let us know!!

FreddysFingers · 07/08/2026 13:38

I'm so sorry, I didn't read to the end of the thread - I'm sorry you didn't get it OP 💐

What is meant for you won't pass you by, I know it feels crappy right now, but there will be bigger and better opportunities round the corner 😘

PositivelyBedevilled · 07/08/2026 16:21

I recently had someone reject me for a role via Teams call, which was absolutely horrendous.

JurgenKloppsTeeth · 07/08/2026 16:42

I would have been a bit annoyed to just get an email after four different rounds of interviews. I think it shows them in a good light that they didn’t choose the easy route, although I would probably have interpreted a scheduled call as a good sign, whereas an unscheduled one could go either way. It’s good to be offered feedback too, even if the timing wasn’t great; many companies simply don’t bother.

JurgenKloppsTeeth · 07/08/2026 16:43

To add: bad luck though, I’m sorry it didn’t work out.

I think they feel like they owe you a phone call, but an email first with an offer of a phone call for feedback is better. Sorry it was a rejection.😢

Wow. That's brutal!

Fairydusthello · 09/08/2026 09:15

In my experience it could be either

Ioaf · 09/08/2026 09:17

Sorry it didn't work out. Four rounds of interviews sounds ridiculous (I know it is common but unless for a vast salary I can't see the need).

Fairydusthello · 09/08/2026 09:19

A scheduled phone call is a bit unusual though.

hearts1989g · 09/08/2026 09:21

My experience is the call is to tell me Iv gotten the job - best of luck 💫

She didn't get the job

Lalaprovence · 11/08/2026 17:29

That's really annoying and misguided IMO. You'd been through a whole process and would obviously be disappointed. Would have been better to email and let you absorb the bad news yourself, and offer in the email a follow up call if you would like.

Sorry it didn't go your way, OP - onwards!
