I am just wondering how this works. Or is it how much you can earn before taxation kicks in.

TIA

I think it's how much you earn rather than how quick you earn it IYSWIM. Look at your tax code, that'll tell you how much you can earn before paying tax and can work it out from that. They work it out on what you worked last year assuming you work that again, so might find you pay emergency tax

i dont have a tax code. Just going from a very small part time job to a slightly bigger part time job. Literally from 8 hours to 11 hours a week

if you are employed you have a tax code, assuming no other allowances it is [[http://www.hmrc.gov.uk/rates/it.htm £5,435]

bythepowerofgreyskull · 26/06/2008 21:53

the hours don't matter, you could (in theory) be earning £50,000 an hour

it is about £4700 a year but you may be taxed with the tax returned to you at the end of the tax year.

mrsleroyjethrogibbs · 26/06/2008 21:53

arse. it will prob come to £110 a week

£5,435 per annum atm.

bythepowerofgreyskull · 26/06/2008 21:54

£5435! wow that has changed since I last earned money..

maidamess · 26/06/2008 21:54

But you'll only get taxed on OVER £100 ish won't you. So you'll lose about £2.

ChasingSquirrels · 26/06/2008 21:54

national insurance kicks in at £105 p/w

mrsleroyjethrogibbs · 26/06/2008 21:55

eek i dont understand that NI chart

OP posts:
ChasingSquirrels · 26/06/2008 21:57

actiall tax is £6,035 for 08/09 now. NI is still the same. So a small amount of NI.

ChasingSquirrels · 26/06/2008 21:58

umm, the NI is a bit more complex.
Basically you get free stamp (in old terms) between lower earnings level and primary threshold, then you pay above the primary threshold.

mrsleroyjethrogibbs · 26/06/2008 21:59

i am being thick I know but how do I work out NI from that chart

weekly wage - primary threshold (assuming earning between primary - £105 and upper - £770) at 11%.

mrsleroyjethrogibbs · 26/06/2008 22:05

thanks everyone for that. I will probably leave it in their capable hands and get charged emergency tax....lol

ChasingSquirrels · 26/06/2008 22:19

no such thing as emergency tax.
in this case, you leave employment, ex-employer gives you a P45, that has tax code and earnings to date on, you give to new employer, they put on system and you pay correct tax.
voila!

DragonessJoy · 23/03/2019 10:53

If i work 1 job 4 hours one week 6 hours next week mjnimum wage. 2nd job 0 hours er week minimum wage . will i pay tax and if so how much.

VeganCow · 23/03/2019 21:34

No you won’t pay tax

Ylvamoon · 23/03/2019 23:30

OP just Google wage calculator! There are some really good ones that will tell you what you need to know. Tax NI & take home pay.
