I currently work for a major food retailer. Have got 14 yrs service very little absence and good performance reviews etc. My role has just been removed and renamed & added to but I am trained to do many other roles. I have 2 children under 5 (1 is just 1) and have the oldest staring school in sept and 1 in nursery. Hubby also works for the company but over an hour from home in traffic. We both work for a region but can get moved around however I am the only one with a car (he has motorbike) so do all the dropping off and picking up. Had sorted everything out for sept with before and after school club worked round nursery but they now want to move me store as I am p/t and say the new role cannot be done in a store the size of mine p/t. Only problem store they want me to go to probably a good hour in traffic including parking and walking. Can't possibly do an 8 hour day and get there and back dropping kids off ie drop littlest at nursery 7.30am, oldest at school club 7.45. Arrive at work 8.45 finish 5.45 unfortunately after school club finishes at 5.45 and nursery at 6.00 and I am still an hour away from collecting them. Currently I am 10 mins from nursery and 12 from school. They are literally making it so I can't do a job. If I was f/t would have got the job in my current store!
Any ideas am major stressball about it!

I'm not sure where you stand but if I was you I would be finding out all my rights, first thing I would do is book an appointment with CAB.

They are discriminating against you because you are part time. Unfortunately this happens a lot, they make the job unfeasible hoping that you'll quit and therefore save them the money of having to make you redundant.

You do have rights. Get in touch with your union, if you are not a member join now. They can still advise you even if you're not a member. Arrange a meeting and ask a union rep to go with you.

So, your contract says you can be moved around. Your role has been changed but the new role can't be done part time in your current location, and as a result they are moving you.

Did you agree to the changes to your role, is that all done and dusted and sorted, were you satisfied with that?

Are you satisfied that the new role can't be done part time at your current location or do you not agree with that statement?

No I have no choice of the new role it is part of a company wide management restructure. I have done other roles and have offered to do any of these in a closer store? Never seen new role in practice so hard to tell but in my opinion I could do it. Another p/t in my store has been offered a role in my branch I used to be regional specialist for prior to my 1st child! I used to have a jobshare but she is on secondment as a glorified secretary to my managers manager in a job that does not exist on any structure and was not advertised as all jobs in our company are meant to be. If we were still together we would have been bound to have allowed to stay and do new role in current store as we have the expertise for the new role!

If the restructuring is complete and this new role is now your role, then just offering to do another job isn't as simple as it sounds. Are there vacancies for other roles you could do in nearer stores that you could apply for?

Other option is a flexible working request, to either do this job on a part time basis in your current store, if you feel that is possible, or on a job share basis, which sounds as though it is possible. Would your previous job share partner be prepared to come back from the dodgy secondment to job share with you? If you can put in a flexible working request to job share and can also provide them with a ready-made job share partner that might be difficult for them to refuse.
