Will I fail background checks/ lose job offer?

PumpkinPandaShoe · 02/07/2026 21:40

I’ve been offered a job and now going through background checks. Except I’ve just realised the CV I submitted has all the dates out by one year. Ie. It says I worked for a company in 2021 - 2022 but it was actually 2020 -2021. I also have a job that was removed from my CV because it wasn’t relevant to the role and I think that’s why all the dates ended up shifting without me realising. How big an issue will this be? I have already emailed HR and they said the referencing company will be in touch if anything is unclear. I feel sick at my own stupidity.

It’s an honest mistake - you should be fine, perhaps just email and alert to the error in case reference dates don’t match up

PermanentlyExhaustedPigeonZZZ · 02/07/2026 22:06

You'll be fine. They'll clearly see it's an admin error.

wishfulthinking25 · 02/07/2026 22:40

You’ll be fine honestly. Just say what you said here and it’s very clearly an admin error. Make sure the dates are correct for the ref company and you’ll be fine!

NewLifter · 02/07/2026 22:57

I honestly can't see this being an issue - so long as you still meet the criteria

camrose · 02/07/2026 23:00

For most jobs this will be fine but if the role requires a dbs/ more rigorous pre- screening eg in education or care sector it would be a reg flag ( retired HR Director)

PumpkinPandaShoe · 02/07/2026 23:15

@camrose that’s my concern. It’s for a finance company that has quite rigorous checks and I’ve already attended 4 interviews to get the role. I need to give my notice tomorrow but don’t want to if the offer may be withdrawn.

@PumpkinPandaShoe I wouldn’t give notice yet… can you call new company tomorrow and let them know?

PumpkinPandaShoe · 02/07/2026 23:21

I did email them and they said the CV checking company would clarify any discrepancies.

Have you told them?
It's clearly an admin mistake as opposed to you hiding sonething so I would imagine it would be ok. But no one can say for certain on here.
They might ask you to explain why you completely left out a job though be ause this draws attention to it.

PumpkinPandaShoe · 02/07/2026 23:35

it was because it just wasn’t relevant to the job I was applying for and I was trying to streamline my CV. I’ve also had 4 different jobs in the last 6 years because of contracting etc. I lost track of one of them.

Should I contact the background checking people to highlight it as well? And explain?

@PumpkinPandaShoe how long do the checks take?
can you resign after checks are done ?

is it a months notice and do you assume couple of weeks for checks ?

PumpkinPandaShoe · 03/07/2026 00:16

Part of the the checks are references for my current employer so I have to get the ball rolling. I have a notice period of 4 weeks and have been informed the checks will take about that long.

OP posts:
MyDuvetDay · 03/07/2026 07:03

They’re going to contact your current employer to request a reference?

Noshadowsinthedarkness · 03/07/2026 07:06

I had jobs left out my CV with a finance role and it was no issue.

I stacked shelves when the kids were small, it wasn’t relevant to the role. No issue at all with it.

I would just flag the wrong date to your new manager so they’re aware.

I wouldn’t be handing my notice in prior to the checks being done.

pepayfelix · 03/07/2026 07:16

Don’t hand in your notice until the checks are done. Can you book the final week of your notice period as holiday? Ie the week of your expected start date?

You don’t resign a current role until everything is completed with the new job, the offer is confirmed and the contract signed.

PumpkinPandaShoe · 03/07/2026 07:28

I have had offer letter and signed a contract. It’s dependent on references and checks. Do people really wait until checks are complete? How does that work with current employer being contacted for referencing?

OP posts:
PumpkinPandaShoe · 03/07/2026 07:30

I also need to start job on 3rd of August. I’ve been told the checks take 3-4 weeks and my notice period is 4 weeks. If I wait it’s not going to line up at all.

I think seeing as you’ve corrected it they’ll be fine. It’s a formatting slip not a big lie, your age doesn’t matter and unless the quals expire neither do the year they were done or the year of the jobs. I can’t see being a year off and correcting it as a withdrawal of offer offence.

Yep, for every job I’ve got, I’ve told the new employer no notice will be handed in until everything is completed.

As far as references from a current employer goes, for me it’s zero fucks given. I’m just a line on a spreadsheet to them and they’d get rid of me without a second thought if they wanted to.

BrentfordForever · 03/07/2026 15:42

@PumpkinPandaShoe no way I’d give notice either.. is the risk worth taking?

how many holiday days do you have left ?

Tulipandmagnolia · 03/07/2026 15:56

I think as you have corrected it it will be fine. Finance companies can be really strict with any gaps so leaving a company out may flag and they will want an explanation. You would be better to let them know if its a role which is strict. I had to provide bank statements and those will show earnings.

PumpkinPandaShoe · 03/07/2026 17:48

I did let them know via email. I explained it was an oversight that I left a role out. I have left on good terms and could get a strong reference if needed. No holidays left. I did resign today. I know I may regret that but I hate my current role and couldn’t face it any longer!
