Tutoring

I see tutoring suggested a lot as a role.
Are there any tutors who would be happy to talk about the ins and outs.
I won't state what my questions are unless I know anyone will listen!

That's a great start, thank you.
Would I just need to trawl though to find posts from tutors talking about their work, rather than people looking for tutors?
I am not looking for a tutor, but want to ask about being a tutor - hence posting in Work.

Editing to add - overuse of the word tutor, forgive me!

I think you will find a variety of posts. And it will help you learn what parents are looking for. You will also see how people suggest they search for a good tutor etc.

Plus tutors do go there.

Are you a trained teacher?
What age / subjects are you considering?

You’re being very cagey! If you say what kind of tutoring you’re considering, you might get more helpful answers. I’m an 11+ tutor with 20 years of primary school teaching experience. Happy to answer questions.

No Smile

But i have used various tutors for my DD, and have a general interest in education.

If i were you i would just go on the other board and post your questions and see what happens.

As a parent I wanted

  • trained teacher
  • knowledgeable on specific exam spec
  • face to face
  • gentle and encouraging
  • no interim work

I'm really not. I haven't asked any questions to need answer to yet.

I'm not even at the considering stage yet, just thinking about my options as I face another end of contract.

I am not a teacher.
I am degree educated in Molecular Biology and have used that knowledge in my career so far.
I have had 2 sons go through GCSEs, one currently doing A levels/CTEC and another to degree.
One son had a maths tutor.
The tutor board seems very London and 11+ centric.
I am not in London nor an 11+ area.

I tutor for science (though I’m dialling down my private stuff to focus on my day job in alternative provision at the moment).

I’m a qualified teacher though, I imagine it’s tougher if you’re not either a qualified teacher or a (cheap) recent graduate.

But I’ll answer questions happily.

As a parent I'm not in London or an 11+ area.

I wanted more than just specialised knowledge. I wanted someone who could explain clearly to my DD and who understood exactly what was needed to gain marks.

I had 1 fab English tutor, and one hopeless one. One poor science tutor who couldn't pitch at the right level, and finally one fab English&Maths who got DD through her exams eventually. I should have binned off the hopeless ones faster than I did.

Thank you both. Appreciated. I'll come back to this tomorrow.

I've had a good gander at that board now and picked up some knowledge.
Thank you.
