Im 48 in a band 6 clinical NHS role wanting to progess but realistically I am going to have to change roles or careers to do so as there is 0 progeession in my dept.
I have done my bit for the greater good and worked in "rewarding" roles and now my main objective is to earn as much as possible to afford a better quality of life and Retirement.

My good qualities:
2 x degrees (2.1 and 1st), pgce, pgcert ( distinction).
great people and communication skills,
Creative
2 days off sick in 2 years so very dedicated.
Driven
Constant self audit.

Things i need to work on:
Perimenopausal forgetfulness/ anxiety.
Might be on the spectrum and have fallen foul of politics a few times.
Lack of self confidence
It skills need upgrading buy can do basics/ fill spreadsheets etc.

What I am NOT interested in:
Private health clinician ( been there / done that)
Teaching secondary ( ditto for a bit).
Care work.
Anything overworked under paid.
Taking on more student dept to retrain.

Am i asking too much?

Would you be interested in accounts type work? Obviously you need to use IT systems and spreadsheets but you can do things like AAT. It can be quite solitary work if you feel like you'd like change from a public/client facing role.
That can lead to well paid work once you progress.

Maybe...but worried about incurring debt

Nope, many agencies provide the training for you.

Following as interested in the advice given - am in a similar but different position.

However, don't think this is a helpful take -

2 days off sick in 2 years so very dedicated.

If you work clinically you must be aware that people who get ill and are unable to work at times do not lack dedication, but have the misfortune to contract an illness or sustain an injury. Conversely, never needing to take time off sick is often good fortune and nothing else (and may in fact be unhealthy and indicate you work in a dept that values presenteeism over well being!)

Pharmaceutical industry sales or biotech sales. Anything where you need an understanding of human anatomy. A telephone advisor for certain medical conditions. Medical writing/content creating.

coronafiona · 25/06/2026 22:40

Go and work in industry: med tech or pharma

malificent7 · 26/06/2026 06:21

Edictfromno10- which agencies are these?

Are you in a clinical role currently?

Normallyinthepool · 26/06/2026 06:49

2 days off sick so very dedicated.

Surely you are aware that people can be incredibly dedicated to their job and just have the misfortune to get ill /have chronic illness?

Easypeasyitis · 26/06/2026 07:08

For the menopause. I recommend menopace from Vitabiotics, I also take magnesium Glycinate from Solgar y Omega 3 from Omvits. Also excercise

For confidence: Therapy, pethaps some meditation. I use the mindful movement from youtube.

I see there is good advice re roles so won’t advise on that; but lots of free courses for training and updating your skills online

Google is your friend! Hard to advise without knowing your job role or speciality!

@malificent7have you thought of governance type roles? I side stepped in at a 6 going to work in a complaints job and slowly worked my way up to a 8a via various governance type jobs. You’d find it quite easy to make the switch in my Trust at the minute as they can’t recruit externally, and I think clinical experience is a bonus. I started on a 12 month maternity cover and went from there.

malificent7 · 26/06/2026 18:12

Overwork...governance sounds good. I will do some research plus of I stay in the NHS i can maximise my pension.
