Life after redundancy :)

About 10 days ago, I was told that I was being made redundant from my job of 18 months. To say I panicked would be an understatement. Everywhere I looked, people were talking about how difficult the job market is, how 100's of people are applying for every role, and how long it can take to find work.
So I went into full application mode and applied for around 50 jobs in a day.

Fast forward 10 days, and I've just accepted a new role, which is a step up from my current role. To top it off, I also have an interview lined up for another position paying around £20,000 more than my current salary (I'm too scared to take this job even if I got it, as i don't think I'm experienced enough yet)

I'm still a bit shocked, to be honest.

I wanted to share this because when I first heard the redundancy news, it felt like the end of the world. Instead, it may have turned out to be the push I needed.

If anyone else is facing redundancy right now, my advice would be: don't underestimate your value and don't let the headlines about the job market stop you from putting yourself out there.

Good luck to everyone currently job hunting, you've got this!

What a lovely, positive, encouraging post.

Well done OP!

Also hope you get/go for the other job, you might be pleasantly surprised!

That is great. I got a new job within 6 weeks of being made redundant at 55 and got a £15K pay rise. However I now want to move jobs 🤨 as they made someone redundant here in my group a couple of months ago. I believe most jobs you go in for you have to be planning the next step!

How lovely to hear – congratulations to you !

@Anyonegotacluewhattheirjobsabout @Bubblewrapart @FabulousFreshiasThank you all so much for the kind messages.

I was really worried after hearing all the stories about how tough the job market is at the moment, but I suppose it goes to show that it's not always the case. Sometimes things can work out much better than you expect.

As for the higher-paying job (20k higher 😱) , I will go for the interview and see. At this stage, I'd rather start a role that pays less but offers training, support, and the opportunity to develop, rather than stepping into something I'm not quite ready for and risking not passing probation. Or maybe this is just my insecurity speaking, who knows

Thanks for sharing a positive story.

Well done, OP.

I was made redundant after Brexit. It turned out to be the best thing that could have happened for my career as it pushed me into looking at other opportunities that I would never have considered otherwise.

Glad you found something @MrsBennetsPoorNervesAreBack , and you're right, sometimes the push is very much needed.

I think the only thing I will miss is the £15 they give us per day to spend on Deliveroo for lunch. have worked that out to be worth around 3k per yr 😪that's been one hell of a perk!

I was made redundant a good few years ago now, and I was gutted. The 2 people who had beefs with the new line manager were the 2 people who were out the door.
What are the chances?? 🤨

The way they undertook the whole was disgraceful. They picked apart everything i did poorly, and one of the managers said that I didn’t go out ‘with the girls’, so i wasn’t a team player.
Like i say: disgraceful.

I happened to be at a party with one of the senior managers and he actually apologised to me for how poorly it was handled.

The job i got afterwards was excellent (I’m still here after 15 years), and they’ve been very good to me. Much better than the previous employer would have been.
So, i told him that it was all water under the bridge - which it was.
They did me a favour, but that’s only with the benefit of hindsight.

Congratulations OP! It is wonderful to hear good news stories. Really helps when you are in a dark place.

To add another positive note for anyone wanting or needing to change roles, whilst I have heard endless stories about how difficult the job market is, especially for 'old people' like myself at 55. I have secured 3 or 4 interviews recently and just accepted a fully remote, pt role. There are still opportunities out there.

Just to add, when i was made redundant at the end of May I had two job offers in a week. Have just started a new job with a pay rise of 3k, so not huge but ok. I am 58.

Blankscreen · 28/06/2026 00:19

These are the stories I need to read. DH has been made redundant and all I read is doom and gloom.

He hopefully has a second stage interview next week so keeping every crossed.
