Should I have responded to a colleague's comment about my annual leave?

I work in a small team and a new colleague will be starting with us shortly, We’re so busy it’s hard to get your own job done let alone a new starter as there’s the training side to do which we have to do between the three of us. When talking with my colleagues I reminded them that I’d soon be going in annual leave when she said ‘oh leave j]us with the hard work then’..

This has left me feeling a bit off thinking I’m somehow getting away with something, when I’m not. I ignored the comment, Should I have responded to this ?

Sounds to me that it was just a flippant/funny comment. You were right to leave it. What do you think you should have said? I’d have laughed.

SunnySunnyDayz · 18/06/2026 07:36

How was it said? Is that person usually an arse?

Id have thought it a joke or a recognition of a shitty situation, not a slight aimed at you.

You didn't say anything so leave it at that.

Morepositivemum · 18/06/2026 07:37

Another that thinks it was a joke? Otherwise do they never take holidays?

Gateappreciation · 18/06/2026 07:37

Could just be someone stressed, realising that they’ll be short staffed. I think it was just an off the cuff remark, and there was no real meaning to it. Try not to overthink it and enjoy your holiday.

Overtheatlantic · 18/06/2026 07:38

Unless she has form for snarky comments I wouldn’t say anything. What you could do however is draft a training plan of the tasks you will be responsible for and let the others know that you will still do your bit.

Orangejuiceisgood · 18/06/2026 07:38

I’m surprised you have any time to do any work because of the time you’re spending overthinking and being offended by a non comment.

PhilosophicalCheeseSandwich · 18/06/2026 07:39

Sounds like a standard workplace jokey gripe. It's nothing, she doesn't really think you're deliberately leaving others to pick up the slack.

WhereverIlaymycatthatsmyhome · 18/06/2026 07:46

You are overthinking this. It sounds like a throwaway comment to me.

Ethelspagetti · 18/06/2026 07:51

Just ignore it. I had a rude comment for going on maternity leave again! It had been 4 years since my last one?! Some people are just dicks.

I had this, too. Someone also thought I must be having it easy at work because I was 8 months pregnant and knew I'd be off soon. I worked as a teacher so thr work absolutely doesn't stop!

Sugargliderwombat · 18/06/2026 07:58

This post has reminded me that someone also said I was lucky as I had a day out that week.... I was going to my grandads funeral.

Some people are idiots and make crap jokes.

concertinacornflake · 18/06/2026 08:00

This is a routine workplace remark.

Either it was meant lightly, in which case no reply is needed. Or it was meant seriously, which is ridiculous, so no reply is worth making.

It's not necessary to respond to every thought someone else verbalises.

Weekmindedfool · 18/06/2026 08:00

Depends entirely on the tone it was delivered in and your relationship with the colleague.

Ifeeltheneedtheneedforcoffee · 18/06/2026 08:01

It was just a standard joke and often the person it is daid to will say "oh yes ill.think of you all from my sun lounger whole drinking cocktails" type thing.
Then when the other person goes on holiday they say the same thing.
Not particularly ground breakingly funny but not offensive (unless there is a huge drip feed coming)

LordEmsworth · 18/06/2026 08:02

There is no "should" here. But agree you're taking it too seriously. I'd have laughed and said yeah damn right, can't wait, when's your hols again... But it was fine for you to not say anything

ConstanzeMozart · 18/06/2026 08:05

Depends how it was said. If it was meant as a joke (I don’t think it’s a funny or appropriate one, but some people will) I’d ignore.
If it felt more serious, I’d have left a short silence and given them a flat, hard look, then carried.

EBearhug · 18/06/2026 08:06

We have a running joke thst I managed to be on timed leave when high priority tickets come in. We all know it's not actually the case.

I agree. If someone said this to me I wouldn’t give it a moment’s thought.

Blogswife · 18/06/2026 08:08

I used to get this a lot from one particular person - especially when I occasionally worked from home and others had to be in the office . I just used to laugh & reply “ I’ll be thinking of you when I’m watching Jeremy Kyle with my feet up “ or similar .
I was the manager though and after one too many comments , I hauled her in the office for a stern chat !

Dollymylove · 18/06/2026 08:09

Was it not just meant to be tongue in cheek? Me and my colleagues always came out with jokey comments when one of them was abiut to go on holiday. Everyone had a chuckle and then we moved on.
Are people really so ultra sensitive nowadays?

I have probably had this said to me and i may have said something like it to othes no idea but wouldn't phase me and no one has anything to me about it

GinaandGin · 18/06/2026 08:15

I would clap back... oh are you a martyr
Do you not take annual leave

Komints · 18/06/2026 08:40

If it's jokey, no need to say anything other than chuckle.

If it's genuinely a dig, I'd have just replied 'oh! Do you not get annual leave then? That's weird...' and walked away.

lebin · 18/06/2026 14:36

Usual sort of office joke.

Skyflier · 18/06/2026 15:03

My colleagues and I say things like this all the time. Unless she has form for being nasty treat it like the jokey comment it probably was.
