Job offer dilemma- Contract does not match job ad & interview discussion (location)

I had an interview for a part-time job with a national charity and was offered the role.

The job ad stated I would be providing support to clients within my local town and the nearest town.

Location is key for me as I have a disability and cannot drive due to lack of vision in one eye. I also struggle to do long, repeated journeys on trains which is why I applied for what I thought was a local role (I can travel by bus in my town and the nearest one without too many issues).

At interview I asked about the ''patch'' allocation and was assured this would be based on where I live. But when I received the offer/contract the role is listed as covering an entire county.

I queried this and asked for the 'patch' to be written into the contract. They have come back to say it cannot do this as I will be expected to go where clients referrals are made and over staff holidays/absences in other patches within the county.

They do not contribute to the cost of transport either so on a part-time salary travelling back and forth would make little sense financially.

I had a nightmare experience with my previous role in the same sector where I was hired to do an hybrid role with the agreement I would only have to attend the office (a 5 hour journey in total for me) every three months only for my manager to ask me to come in every week a few months later which was simply impossible for me to sustain.

Am I unreasonable to decline the offer under the circumstances to avoid another bad experience? I am also annoyed to be honest about the lack of transparency about what the job really entailed.

What would you do?

I would politely decline given their expectations of you working here there and everywhere

CoffeeBeansGalore · 16/06/2026 11:08

Don't take it.

Iocanepowder · 16/06/2026 11:08

YANBU to decline. It will also piss them off and hopefully they will learn to be clear in their interviews. Definitely confirm the reason why you are declininng.

Definitely not unreasonable. Decline and point out (politely) that the contract doesn't reflect what was discussed at interview.

YANBU. And I would feedback on some very sharp practice they’ve displayed about holiday cover etc which changes the nature of the role substantially

Thank you everyone for all the quick replies. I really appreciate them!

It is really good to see that people are in agreement as well.

I am so disappointed because I was really happy to have found a job but it sounds like it will be better long term to keep looking for something else rather than jump on the first job I am offered and ignore the red flags.
