Anyone know a rough idea for salary for an associate solicitor? Thanks

You are either a solicitor or you are not. Is this a qualified solicitor role? If so - hugely depends on job! City of London job - sky high! Criminal duty solicitor - not much!

eurochick · 10/06/2026 06:50

Associate solicitor is a common job title. It means a junior solicitor.

The salary range is a “piece of string” question. It can be anything from a pittance up to about £180k for a newly qualified associate at a handful of US firms.

Associate solicitor is a perfectly usual role. What an odd first reply to steam in with.

It doesn’t really does if, you’re an associate and can be junior, mid or senior and years qualified is hugely relevant.

op, the question is too large, it depends on area of specialism and firm. For example high street pays less than the major firms, criminal tends to be low, corporate high,

someone newly qualified could be on anything from 25k to 180k.

It does typically mean a junior solicitor. Each firm has its own structure but it will often be something like associate - senior associate - managing associate - partner, or associate - counsel - partner.

Yes that’s true,..

anonhop · 10/06/2026 08:08

high street firm up north doing immigration, criminal etc- 30k
Top US/ international huge commercial firm in the city- up to 300k for a senior associate (including bonus etc)

AHalfling · 10/06/2026 08:28

As others have said, it.varies wildly depending on the area of practice

roadrunnerbeepbeep · 10/06/2026 08:31

Associate is a pretty meaningless term. In some parts of UK it will mean someone quite experienced. Less so elsewhere.

Associate solicitor is not a junior solicitor.

In my firm, its Solicitor, Senior Solicitor, Associate Solicitor and then Senior Associate Solicitor.

You’re really not a solicitor are you? A “criminal duty solicitor” that’s not a job description.

But yes @feckingmassivecakeandvesttop we’d need a lot more information to be able to answer this.

  1. Geographical area
  2. Type of firm
  3. Practice area
  4. Years PQE.

Associate solicitor is not a junior solicitor.

In my firm, its Solicitor, Senior Solicitor, Associate Solicitor and then Senior Associate Solicitor.

That is an unusual set of titles. I have never come across that before (20+ years in law firms).

Piglet89 · 10/06/2026 18:54

OP clearly doesn’t know much about the industry if she doesn’t understand the huge range of salaries a qualified solicitor can have depending on practice area, area of the country, nature of firm etc. as PPs have said.

What is the background/context to the question @feckingmassivecakeandvesttop?

feckingmassivecakeandvesttop · 13/06/2026 02:51

Sorry, background is DS who is considering moving to the UK for a few years. He is an associate solicitor here in our country ( I thought that was a pretty universal term) and was just wondering what the pay range was. Quite wide seems to be the answer.

If your son is really a solicitor, frankly I would expect him to be able to research this kind of thing for himself (given he - one hopes - knows his level of PQE, practice area etc). Therefore he’s better placed to work out where he’d sit in the UK system, whether he’d be required to sit the SQE etc.

In what jurisdiction is he qualified?

My firm is almost the same, except we don't have 'Senior Solicitor' in the mix.

Musicaltheatremum · 13/06/2026 14:50

Our solicitor is a director which is just below partner for this firm. They have solicitors and senior solicitors and associates and senior associates then director.

localnotail · 13/06/2026 15:28

There are plenty of resources about this online, just google "solicitors salary survey" - they usually come grouped by area, experience, size of a company etc.

IDontHateRainbows · 14/06/2026 16:03

Best way to find out is to look at some job boards?

If you state his years of post-qualification experience, area of practice and general area he is moving to (London, other city, small town) we can probably give a bit more of an idea.

Firesidechatter · 14/06/2026 17:05

is he qualified in English law? Or Scottish? And what field is he in? It’s an odd question to ask as you appear unable or unwilling to add any detail, so why ask?

Which country is he qualified in? Law is not very transferable.

Piglet89 · 14/06/2026 21:49

Her username suggests the justification her son’s in might be Ireland but in absence of further detail it’s all guesswork ATM.

it depends hugely on his specialism and location

His bet bet will be to talk to a few recruitment agents

Followthesunshine · 14/06/2026 23:06

More information needed. There is a vast difference between someone working in a high street legally aided criminal firm and someone working in a magic circle firm.
