Using AI for CVs and application forms for local authority roles

Have you successfully used AI to write CV and application forms/supporting statements?

in the middle of applying for a job that I really really desire - local authority. AI is helping me rewrite and tailor CV to the role, and I think I’m happy with it - it is clearer and I think it still retains enough of my specific examples.

  1. will the screening process eject it as too AI?

for the application form it has suggested subheadings based on core duties within the role, for example. However job spec has (LENGTHY) list of criteria under generic headings of: skills, experience etc - I assume this is how they’d like candidates to answer?? But AI idea makes more sense as it’s easier for recruiter to see how my skills fit the role requirements?

  1. do I listen to AI or follow the job spec criteria?
I have not used AI in an application before so I don’t want to scupper my chances for a job I really want, thank you’

@TheChicDreamer yes, this is exactly the method I am using. With clear, specific, personalised examples of how I match.

As a manager I would not hire anyone who relies on AI to write their application/cover letter/CV.

Because it just tells me the person is unable to think for themselves.

Also, you are removing your chance to stand out from the crowd by using AI.

It is better to personalise your application, tell the employer why you really want the job and let your individuality show rather than have some generic content.

This.

We do have an AI scanner, and all AI applications are dismissed.

It’s generally pretty obvious when AI has been used.

@EnoughRain true, I don’t know if they will even look at the CV, it is just uploaded into the careers portal - but I tailored it just in case. There are no questions in the application form just a statement to evidence skills and experience.

How can you tell if AI has been used? What makes it obvious?

AI writes well. If you are well educated and articulate AI and plagiarism checkers come up with a high risk value of it being written by AI even when it wasn’t.
If you ask AI to humanise it, it dumbs it down which is so sad. I think we need to find a better path through this minefield as good staff will be screened out to soon.

I Taylor my cv and covering letter to meet the criteria of job description and also use AI to help. How do I ask AI to final check it and make human?

CaptainBeefheartspal · 09/06/2026 16:26

You have to address each point in the job spec for a LA role in my experience.

Curiouscase · 09/06/2026 18:53

@CaptainBeefheartspal yes, this is what I have always done but it is just sooooo long, will take me hours and hours and will be so dull for recruiters to read.
hmm I’m still dithering which option is best!

I've had my third interview after using AI to check my application. But I use it only after doing all the work of reading through the job offer, researching the company and the linkedin profile of people who work there, reading about their project, etc... then tailoring my CV and application letter to the position, and only then I ask Chatgpt to make suggestions to enhance/improve my application for this role. I don't always copy and paste suggestions, I rewrite them in my own style. It's a good tool to help present in a better light my experience, as I'm not very good at that, but you still need to do your homework beforehand
