I work in a small workplace, around 20 people. As it is privately owned we don’t have a specific HR department, the owner (will call her Anna) deals with payroll, recruitment etc.
Recently I have been promoted and as is the nature of the industry, I am now working under my line manager who I’ll call Jane, who then reports to Anna.
I used to go to Anna for most things to do with decision making as I started at the company many years ago and we have expanded quite a lot over the last 5 years. I have been training (masters level) to do the role I am now in. However in the mean time Jane was bought in as she was already at a more senior level than me (which was fine, we needed her!)
It’s coming up to me negotiating a new contract and Anna has asked me to copy Jane on all my correspondence in regards to this, as she is my line manager.
My issue is, Jane keeps saying herself that she feels underpaid and is seeking a raise. Hers has been declined. So she keeps saying to me things like ‘don’t get your hopes up’ etc. I just feel that involving her might complicate things because i know how much she gets paid and it’s not much more than I’m hoping for. I think my expectation is realistic as other places are paying this in my area.
Is it reasonable to want Anna in on my contract?
I would be happy for her to know my hours etc obviously as we are a team. I just don’t think it’s entirely appropriate for her to know my exact wage, particularly as she is good friends with a couple of other employees and I know she’s told them how much she earns etc.
many thanks
